We've been dumping and washing and dh has been using the lysol disinfectant, and I HATE the smell of it. Does anyone have any recommendations for how to keep your little potties clean? How often do you dump? Do you dump, then rinse, then what? Have you changed your "protocol" as dc got older?

Sorry for such a nasty question, but I don't want nasty stuff growing in there!!!

we rinse with the minishower everytime and then once in a while give it a wipe with a vinegar, water tto combo we keep in a spray bottle...nothing's grown thus far! I think the key may be to dry it after...we keep an out of use cloth dipe around for that purpose

Hmmm, maybe I'm not as clean as I should be.

We keep a folded towel on the bathroom counter next to the sink, on which we put the BBLP (less sliding around that way). After use, we rinse baby's bottom in the warm water, then dump the potty contents in the sink, and rinse the sink and potty with hot water (all one-handed while holding baby). At the end of the day, I toss the towel in the wash, and wash the sink with Mrs. Meyer's. No disinfectant at all. Once a week or so, I wash the potty itself with Mrs. Meyer's or some Dr. Bronners, if it needs it. I figure the germs in our family are already in our family, so they're not dangerous. And bf poo is really pretty free of germs anyway.

But DH is emphatic that after guests leave, we change the hand towel. He doesn't want foreign germs on baby's bum!

THat sounds reasonable Kam. We just rinse with water, wipe watever's left over, and spray with vin/water/TTO when the sprayer's handy.

hmmm.. awesome. I think the lysol disinfectant is overkill and I hate it anyway. I personally just dump into the toilet, rinse, and wipe it dry with some TP. I think I might just implement a vinegar/tto wash every couple of days and not worry any more about it.!

thanks all!

My routine is very simple, consistent and effective. Dr. Bronner's Peppermint soap is key and we keep a little bottle by every sink.

First, We dump the pee or poo. Rinse with water and dump in toilet (for poo, rinse extra poo with spraying water, then dump into toilet several time). Wipe any persistent chunks (sorry TMI!) with toilet paper into the toilet. Squirt a little Dr. Bronners Magic Soap - peppermint - swish around, dump into the toilet. Done!

For pee, sometimes we just rinse with water.

We have never had a problem with stench and the potties are always sparkling.

I usually just rinse/ wipe, maybe some soap every so often.

I have run it through the dishwasher (after washing) just to get it extra-clean. I'm sure it has less germs on it than the cutting board I used to chop up the boneless chicken...
