How do you remove snaps from diapers?

934 Views 13 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  ustasmom
I remember a while back there was a thread on this, but I don't remember what the answers were. Does anyone here know how to remove snaps from snap diapers? Short of beating them to oblivion with a hammer would be helpful, tee hee hee.
Do you need some special tools or anything?

i use a drill
just drill out the center prong on the inside of the stud or socket

For metal snaps, I use tweezers to pry up the prongs. For resin snaps, I use needlenose pliers to squeeze the cap off, then the stud or socket will just fall off the other side.

You have to be careful, though, not to rip the fabric. And even if you don't, re-applying a snap in an already existing hole can make the fabric the snap is applied to weaker, possibly causing it to pull through sooner.
Personally, I cry. Then I take my seam ripper and break it in half trying to pop it off.

Then, when the seam ripper is officially broken, I accidentally jam it into my hand and rip open the palm of my hand.

Then I take my super sharp fabric scissors and stab at it, forgetting to be careful and ending up with the scissors stuck in my finger. Then I have to wrap my hand up in a towel to soak up all the blood... and I give it to my dh and cry and he takes it out for me.

This is umm, NOT a recommended method.

Ouch, Kimberly! I don't think I will try that method. The one snap that I have had to remove I beat with a hammer. Well, actually I had dh do it.

My new favorite method is to take a screw-driver (philips head) & put the snap down (cap side up) & put the screw-driver in the middle & hit it a couple times w/a hammer. Works like a charm
I used to use nail clippers, but it took WAY too long.

I get a butter knife, wedge it as best as I can between the snap parts and twist as best I can, to loosen it up. Then I get needle nose pliars and squeeze between the snap. It pops off 99% of the time.

Not that I do this often... But I try to break the middle thing holding the snap on, or I get a screw driver between the layer and break it. My DH is pretty good at it. Metal ones are easy to take off and I do the same thing as Heather. It's amazing that the metal ones stay on at all!

channel locks and squeeze the sides of the cap
don't tell my mom but I use my teeth on my resin ones
Like a previous poster said, I just grab the cap with pliars and squeeze til it breaks in half. The socket/stud drops right off.
