How do you use flax seed oil?

647 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  DreamWeaver
I want to start having flax seed oil in my diet and am unsure how to use it. I know I can use it in salad dressings, but salads are something I am not very good about eating. Is it ok to cook with it or does the heat break down the good stuff?

TIA for any info!

I have heard of people mixing it with juice and drinking it, or putting it over eggs after they cool a bit.
Personally I think the taste is terrible to drink straight so when I use the oil, I blend it into smoothies to hide the taste. I actually much prefer to use ground flax seeds. I sprinkle it on everything -I use about a 1/4 cup in my morning oatmeal but it too can be blended in smoothies, mixed into yogurt, added to baked goods.

Just on a side note, flax meal blended with water makes a fabulous egg substitute in cooking. I stumbled across it when I was making cornbread and didn't have any eggs. I used flax blended with water for several minutes and used it like eggs - The cornbread was fabulous!
Lately we've been buying these flaxseed crackers and dipping them in homemade guacamole. Delicious and a very concentrated dose of flax!

I too dislike the taste of the oil. My husband puts flax oil in his banana walnut shakes. I don't like it though.
I eat it off the spoon- love the taste, so does my ds. My dd and husband HATE the oil .

The guacomole sounds like delicious.

What a GREAT idea! Do you need to bake it at a lower temperature to keep the oil fresh? (I know certain oils need to be cooked at lower temps).
Flax oil is not suitable for cooking. It should never be heated.

I love flax seeds and oil. I use the oil for salad dressing, stir it into yogurt or smoothies, drizzle it over a (slightly cooled) baked potato.

Ground flax seed is actually more beneficial than the oil and can be sprinkled over just about anything you want. I just grind a couple tablespoons of seeds in the blender each morning and use it throughout the day (keep refrigerated).

I don't do this with the oil, only the flax meal - actually, I don't think you're supposed to cook the oil at all. What I do for the egg substitute is blend 1T flax meal with 3T water in the blender for several minutes until it's a thick "eggy" consistancy. That mixture is the equivalent of one egg and you can use it in baking.
Thanks for clearing that up. I read the post wrong (have been up since 5 am) and thought oil, not meal. I have been needing a good egg substitute and that sounds healthy. Thanks for the tip!
I just wanted to share another excellent idea I got from another mum:
Let butter soften in a bowl or container.
Stir in equal amt of flax oil. Mix well.
Return to refrigerator to harden.
Use as spread on breads, bagels, etc. No one will tell!!
