I'm interested in this too. Since dd started weaning I have had wicked insomnia, like maybe 3 hours of sleep a night for the past 2 months. The only thing that has changed is the nursing frequency. I cut the nursing back one at a time, one every 2 weeks. I guess this was too close together... At this point I'm wondering if I'm going to have to wean completely and take some perscription drugs to start sleeping again. The herbal stuff isn't working
... Anyway I'm going to my pro-EBF doc friday and maybe I'll find out some useful info...

Well for me, when my son started cutting back nursings was about when my depression started to lift...but I never did get that rush of whatever hormone-caused good feelings, I was pretty depressed!

I think the hormones affect different people differently. I think for me they actually serve to deepen the depression, and it takes more work for me to feel happy. Also I am one of those people who don't lose weight while breastfeeding, don't know if the two are linked or not?

T , but are you getting some exercise? I find if I don't have a decent amount of physical activity, I am really restless at night.

about the exercise...
i usually either do 30 minutes of pilates or carry dd in a backpack for a 30 minute walk
AND
do "power" yoga for about an hour a day (my husband is a saint.)

so its not the exercise. tomorrow the doctor. right now i'd do just about anything to sleep for 6 hours....

Weaning can occur so gradually that you are not really sure it has happened until after it has happened. This is more common when children wean after 2 1/2 years or so. Depression may be less likely in this situation. You might enjoy reading Dettwyler about weaning.

If a baby/child weans before the mother is ready there may be significant depression that comes and goes for years. Sometimes this happens when a mother weans to get pregnant and can't get pregnant or has a miscarriage. There can be depression when the last child weans. Some depression is predictable and some is unexpected. We still don't know a lot about depression.
