How far in advance...

...is TOO far in advance to buy cloth diapers?

I'm going to be adopting, and even if everything goes perfectly in my life it will likely be 18 months or more before I have my daughter home (closing on land sale, finding & buying and closing on house, moving, finding agency slot, paperchasing, 6+ months wait for referral...). I'm not allowing myself to buy anything for her until I'm in my new house (hopefully by this fall), but after that I'm not sure if I can resist the temptation.

I was thinking that having so much time would allow me to build up a variety of different diapers/covers/accessories to try without there being one big outlay of cash all at once, and I might have a better chance at scoring a hard-to-get item or two.

I know that flats and prefolds last forever - my mom had old flats in the rag drawer still when we were in high school - but what about fitteds? AIOs? Covers? Wool? Snappies even? Do I need to worry about elastic going bad? Would I need to store them in any special way? Any other advice for me?

Thanks!

Hi Amy! So, I know you know some of our story, and I know you're planning on adopting from China. If I were you, instead of starting to buy, I would put the money aside for diaper purchasing now. That way the money is trickling in over time and not all at once which sounds like is your concern.

As I understand it, you'll have a fairly good idea of how long it will be until your referral once you are paper ready. That would give you a good 6-8 months to actually purchase in time for your new babe to arrive.

I thought I had waited until a month before we were picking our daughter up to start buying diapers, but well we lost her and so it was a full year later from the time I first started buying them until our daughter was home. That's just too long, and it just got too sad at times.

So excited for you!

ETA: Oh, I forgot to mention too that I thought it would be smart to get some hard-to-get things ahead of time. But, my babe was much larger than I had expected, and didn't fit in at least 1/3 of her stash. So, keep that in mind too. I even had monthly medical updates along the way and knew her weight/height, but didn't know it was all in her thighs. :LOL

I started buying diapers before I started TTC.

Good thinking!

Use lavender and cedar to store your wool.

Thank you for your advice!

Holli, I was worried about sizes as well, and I think that will likely keep me from buying TOO much ahead of time. I'm going to try to prevent myself from buying until I have a good idea when my referral is coming, and try then not to buy too much. My best friend is TTC now, maybe I can distract myself by finding things for her to buy! I suspect I'll see SOMETHING I have to have before then, but I'm really going to try to postpone it.

I'm planning to put my cedar chest (which my dad built and I stenciled with flowers
) in the baby's room. That may be a great diaper/wool storage place!

I think buying a little at a time of the basics is a great idea.
I think sticking with the basics at first is your best bet. Good luck on you adoption. Some friends of ours just adopted a little girl from China this past February.
