recently my 4mo has only been nursing for 5 min on each side and even that is a struggle--he is not being distracted but simply seems done. my friend who only nurses on one breast per feeding only nurses for 10 min per time. so how long does your baby nurse at a time?

Well, I have two, and they're very different. DD2 is all business. She's often finished in less than 10 minutes, and sometimes takes 5 minute snacks. Only first thing in the morning will she take longer than 10. But DS likes to linger-- he'd nurse all day given the chance, and rarely is he finished before a half hour has gone by. He's an optimist, ya know, hoping and believing that if he keeps at it the next letdown is only just around the corner. They're both three months old.

Oddly enough DD is gaining faster than DS, for all he spends hours on the boob.

Both of my youngest two girls nursed for one hour per session. 30 minutes on each side; starting from when each of them was a newborn, to when they stopped nursing at over a year (for one) or two years (for my last one) old. I often wished I had one of them fast nursing babies.

My DS nursing session lasts about 5 min and he only nurses on one breast. He nurses and pacify around 15-20mins when he is falling asleep.

my first dd was 15-20 minutes on each side easy. dd 2 was a quick single side nurser. I got rather used to that and inadvertently expected ds to be the same way and at 2 weeks ended up with my only case of mastitis. He was really a 2 side boy maybe a little faster than dd1. and unlike the girls he had to have his hands together when he nursed not one in front and one behind. They are all really different!

DD has gotten much faster lately--nursing about 5-10 minutes during the day. At night or when she's going down for a nap, she usually nurses longer. I wonder if the milk flow is different depending on the hold: cradle or side-lying. Or maybe she just nurses longer and slower when she's sleepy.

My 7.5 month old has NEVER nursed for more then 5 minutes on each side. She's also tiny so in the beginning I was SCARED to death because I didn't think she was getting enough and therefore not thriving. However, I have since realized she's just small and a super efficient nurser!

ds varies speeds. if he's something he wants to do, he's superquick, maybe five minutes/side. if he wants to sleep . . . he's latched all night. on average, tho, about ten minutes.

dd#1 45mins from birth to 6 months! Then about 20mins from 6 months until weaned.

Ds 15-20mins until I got prego at 16months then I limited it to 5 mins realted to nipple discomfort, now at 28 months he nurses for 3-5 mins on his own

dd#2 10mins tops!

If this trend keeps up and if we have dc#4 it will be in the guiness book for quickest nurser

My kids have all been super speedy nursers! Even tonight, DS nursed, pulled off, I sat him up for a minute or two and kept trying to get him back to the breast for more. He kept looking at me like I was crazy! It is like he gets what he wants and then is DONE!

All 3 of my kids have been this way, maybe it has something to do with my
'enthusiastic' letdown? I do long for a lingering nurser since we know that this is our last babe.
