Ever since I was little, I have been terrified of the idea of a nuclear explosion here in Los Angeles. It's one of those things that I've come to almost "expect". Yes, i'm a little paranoid. It's kind of like those stories of people who grow up petrified of certain things like flying on a plane and never do but then wind up having a plane crash on their house. I almost wonder if I have some sort of pyschic ability or if it's just such a real possibility that I'm freaking out?

Yeah, I'm rambling and I admit to being a bit OCD (ok a lot..
) BUT.....in light of recent events.....what is the likelyhood of someone sneaking a bomb into a port somewhere or smuggling it in somehow.....even in pieces and then assembling it here? If religious extremists want to wipe Israel and the US off the face of the earth.....then what better way than with an explosion that could take out millions? I used to think that if it was any sort of possibility, our government would be all over it and protect us......now it wouldnt surprise me if they didnt see a nuclear device driving by the white house on a flat bed truck with a red flag hanging off the back
:

Anyway.....what do you all think? Is it inevitable? Will we see it in our lifetime?

It's very possible that we will see nuclear war in our lifetimes.

I am flirting around with the idea of disaster preparedness for my family. Maybe a big rubbermaid container for the trunk of the car, stock with Potassium Iodide, water, MREs, camping/survival gear. I haven't purchased any survival books yet, but it is on my list of things to do next month.

I think you may be related to my DH.
Don't forget an alternative fuel source/food source. Nuclear winter sucks. I do think we will see a nuclear war, but I don't think it will be on our continent.

We purchased a survival book, but we are taking little steps for preparedness in the event of any disaster. Bottled water, non-perishables, first aid kit...we are even thinking of getting a solar stove (which is great for taking on camping trips anyway). The least that could happen is that we would just need to rotate the food-stuffs on occasion.

We are in the works to setting up a contingency plan in the event we are separated and need to evacuate.

Of course we hope it never comes down to this. And I cannot let it take over my life, so I am not losing too much sleep over this. What will happen will happen.

I can see a nuke being set off by a rouge group or maybe a country like North Korea. In case you weren't worried enough ( http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...&q=loose+nukes ) <------That's my real worry. Too much out there and not enough urgency to get rid of it. On the other hand, I don't see two nuclear powers going to war with their nukes... well maybe Pakistan and India. I guess you prepare for the worst in the hopes you don't need to put it in action.

I think it is far more likely that the United States of America will start a nuclear war, than any non-state terrorist organisation.

I say that based on the following evidence:

1. Many of the neocons believe in pre-emptive nuclear strikes as the way forward. US official policy is that it reserves the right to use nuclear bombs on non-nuclear armed countries.....an outrage.

2. The US govt. certainly believes in pre-emptive wars ( a world first, and in violation of all international laws), as we have seen with it's invasion of Iraq.

3. The US practices terrorism in all it's forms, by threatening and coercing smaller nations which are no military threat to it, under the subterfuge of their harbouring terrorists, or having non-existent nukes.

4. The US has by far the biggest arsenal of nuclear warheads, and is the only country in the world to have ever used the nuclear bomb on another country. It is clear now that this action which killed 200,000 people was militarily unnecessary.

5. The closest times the world has ever come to nuclear armageddon has on each occassion involved the US. This was in the 1963 Cuban missile crisis when the US threatened nuclear attack against Cuba and Russia, for putting nukes in Cuba, even though hypocritically the US had masses of nukes in West Germany and Turkey, just as close to Russia as Cuba was to the US. There was also the time in 1983 when during a Nato war exercise, Nato warplanes aggressively buzzed Russian positions in East Germany. The Russians thought they were being attacked for real, and started proceedings to launch nuclear missiles. Luckily a double agent working for the KGB contacted Britain's MI6, and the UK's prime minister, Margaret Thatcher rang Ronald Reagan in the middle of the night. He had the good sense to stop the NATO war exercises.
Another time came in January of 1995. The US had warned the Russians that they were test launching a missile from a nuke sub off the coast of Norway. But the Russians, who are not as efficient in their military as the US, and have rusty satellites and malfunctioning computers, had forgotten. So when the missile was launched there was great alarm. Boris Yeltsin for the first time in history opened up the computer to launch Russian nukes within 3 minutes. Luckily the missile didn't go towards Russia, and he decided to not press the button.

And for all of those of you who want to make up survival kits to survive a nuclear winter......are you kidding???!! Are you mad??? There is no way you will survive a nuclear winter for long. You might as well get it over with and die in the first attacks. You might as well bend down and kiss your ass goodbye!!

It is insane to think you could ever survive a nuclear war and the ensueing nuclear winter. Possibly George Bush and his cronies would survive for a few years in the underground bunkers.....but even him and his friends would die when the oxygen and food ran out and they had to go up and eat contaminated plants, and be exposed to the radioactivity and freezing conditions.

I owe to my children to at least try.

Not to really change the subject or to make light of this thread...as it is deeply disturbing...but do ya'll remember the "Land of Confusion" video? This totally reminded me of that.

OK, more seriously...yes, I do believe it's a possibility in our lifetime. And here, I'm compelled to agree with Aquaduct in that it will be the gov't of the US who resorts to such measures.

One of the most likely ways the US could start WW3 is if it elects to drop a nuclear bunker-busting bomb on Iran.

As the neocons advocate strongly for (Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Perle etc.), and have even devised plans for. Luckily (so far) the US military top brass have managed to talk some sense, and have prevailed with the idea that it would be unacceptable.

But if Iran gets close to developing the capability of making a nuke warhead, then the chances are high the US or it's proxy, Israel, will attack.

Just by talking about that possibility, and reserving the right to drop a nuke on other nations without nuclear bombs, is not only immoral and aggressive, but is asking for a nuclear arms race.

Other nations need to protect themselves from predatory nations that have a history of invasions behind them, like the UK and the USA. That's how they see it.

The best thing would be of course for all the world to give up not just nuclear bombs but nuclear power. It is too dangerous a technology.
