So how long before u went out driving alone with newborn? DD is 3 weeks and I am thinking of going to a LLL meeting. I really don't like driving w/ NB but I want to go somewhere. I might even go out to eat just the 2 of us. Is this too early? Should I just chill so I don't have to worry about her starting to cry?

W/ DS, DH was unemployed until he was 4months so I didn't drive alone w/ a baby until then.

DS is 12 days old today, and for our first daddyless outing, we will be attending the mommies' group at our birth center next Wednesday (he'll be 2w5d).
I'm nervous about him even being in the back seat alone, but I NEED to get out of the house. So far we've only left for a handful of Dr. and midwife appointments.
If this solo mission goes well, I may take him to Kohls so I can find some clothing that actually fits me.

Are you taking any heavy-duty pain meds? How quickly could you get home? Are you so sleep deprived you might run off the road? Are you healing well and able to go for a short walk (like around the block)?

With DS, it took 5 weeks before I went anywhere alone with him. With DD, I was running errands alone with her by 2-3 weeks or so.

with dd I was in tons of pain and wasn't sure how to handle a baby out of the house so it was probably a few weeks before I worked up the guts to go anywhere alone. People used scare tactics with me then as well... telling me I'd get her sick if she didn't stay home for the magical first 2 weeks
. Dh and I lived with my mom when dd was born and my mom was able to take 2 weeks off work so I really didn't have to go anywhere alone during that time.

with ds it was only a few days before I was back to running errands with both ds and dd by myself. No long trips for awhile because thats just to draining for both kids and myself. Those firts couple weeks were actually the easiest because ds sleep a majority of the time and stayed asleep for entire outings. Now I have to plan around his feedings, diaper changes, and naps. Dh and I own our own house now and dh had to go back to work 2 days after ds was born. My mom offered to take extra time off and come over to help but, I didn't really need the help this time around so it was just me and the kids by day 3 or 4.

With my baby, my first solo outing w/ baby was when she was 13 days old- I went to my knitting group with her. It went really well, and she just slept in the car there and back.

I was feeling mostly fine by that point as well, just couldn't walk very far without discomfort, so that was a big factor as well.

I can't stand to be in the house for any lenth of time, with all my kids I was out of the house the next day. Nothing big just going to the grocery store or picking the kids up from preschool.

I went out alone with my baby at 2 weeks. But I needed to get out of the house, and he is a really easy baby, and hardly cries, so I wasn't worried. Plus I was feeling almost 100% physically at that point, so the trip went really well. I think it really depends on how you feel though.

Ds was about 3 weeks when I took him to an LLL meeting. It's a good place to take him b/c I'm not embarrassed if he has a meltdown. We got a mirror for the headrest of the backseat at Walmart so we can see him in the rearview while driving. It makes me feel much better being able to see him.

5days for number 3, I remember cause it was dd1's birthday, and we brought dd2 to her preschool, to show her off. Ds was probably about the same. DD1 was probably a bit longer, we only had one car at the time, and we just went everywhere with dh, though I was always teh driver. DD3 was about a week old.

A LLL meeting is a great place to start if you're nervous about solo outings

3 days after. I had to have Miles bilirubin levels checked and had to bring him to a hospital for that. Since I don't drive, I had to do 2 buses in the dead of winter, but he was warm and snug in my ringsling.

Thanks for replies,

We have been out already just w/ DH driving. I am feeling fine. Recovery is easy as I didn't tear or had any problems. And we been outside for walks.

I just remember some driving days w/ DS when I would have to pull over numerous times because he would be crying, that is what I like to avoid. I will go today and see how it works and hope she just sleeps through it.
