I have a 3 week old and have been staying at home for the last three weeks, with the exception of going to the pediatrician and for walks around the neighborhood (very few because its so hot here).

How long does everyone else wait to go to places like the grocery store, library, etc.

Does it help their immune systems to be around more people in the beginning?

I'm going stir crazy and need to get out!

We took ds to dh's work at 3 days and to a birthday party & a wedding at 5 days. Heck, we moved from San Diego to Austin when he was 2.5 weeks. Get out of the house, mama!

We had people over within an hour of DD2 being born. We went to a family dinner at 3 days and a quick grocery store run shortly after that and have gone out to eat more than once. We've been all over and loads of people have been around. I don't understand staying in. It's just not us...we were out with DD1 early on too.

Now if you can I say avoid toddlers. DD2 has a cold right now that we think is from a cousin (who's almost 2.5) and has a tendency to be sick often. She didn't look sick when we were there but those toddlers can be tricky!

dd was 5 days old at her first trip to the grocery store. ds was a week and a half at his first playgroup (and would have been 4 days old except I hemorraged during his birth, so instead my friends came to our house for the days between dh going back to work (day 3) to the first playgroup so my dd wouldn't go crazy and to let me nap.)

Three weeks, but that was because I was recovering and babymooning. And it was cold outside.

I'm a fan of babymooning, but go out when you feel like it. I started wanting/feeling competant to go out starting around 3-4 weeks, justa little, and up for real trips around 8 or so. but everyone's different.

i waited to take matthew out until he was 4, almost 5 weeks old, but he was born in December, so i figured keeping him away from public places for the first month was safest.

thanks for the responses, I know I still want to be home alot so I can catch up on much needed sleep, but look forward to going somewhere too. I never thought I'd be so excited to go grocery shopping

As to their immune system if you are bfing

Taking the baby to the dr a person would probably encounter more germs there than just going out and about.

I get stir-crazy at home and never stayed in. Went grocery shopping while out for DD's weight check on the day after we came home with her, and was meeting new friends at the zoo by week 3.

go out when you feel comfortable going out. there is no rule. i waited a long time because i had a rough labor and needed time to mentally and physically be prepared, plus it was pouring rain for a while. but my best friend went out 4 days after her son was born...its just what feels good to you.
i had my mom with me the first time i went out. it was nice to have someone there. i felt a bit overwhelmed. but now, at 8 months, i can barely remember that feeling. good luck and congrats on the new baby!

ok i babymoon backwards it seems.....the first 4 weeks or so of dd2's life i was out and about like crazy doing stuff....i just could not sit at home.....but now that i have adjusted more to a newborn i am actually in babymoon mode, we stay in, lay in bed all day, watch TV and nurse.

i know this is totally backwards but i felt the same way with dd1, but i had a rougher c-section recovery and was stuck at home longer and actually had more ppd problems because of it i think....as with Natalie i just did what i wanted and felt right to me and have so far been ppd free

One week, excluding Dr. appts. We took her to a coffee shop to meet up with family.

It took me 5 weeks to take her to the grocery store, but that's because I was chicken. She used to scream if she wasn't asleep!
