How many mws did you speak with before deciding on which one to use? I have only spoken to one so far and I did like her, but I feel like I should talk more than one. There aren't many that are local and, in my state, they aren't exacty out in the open, but I do have resources for contacting others. The one that I spoke to the other day and the one that I want to talk to will be the ony two that are really local (within 1-1.5 hours) that are accepting clients so I kind of feel limited, but that is just how it is. Ther eis one other, but she is not accepting clients and I have met her and not sure she is right for me. However, I would be comfortable hiring the MW that I spoke to yesterday so I don't feel bound to one person.

Also, did you just "know" when you found the right midwife? I am looking at experience, training, comfort level with vbac, etc but I probably don't want someone who's personality will clash with mine during labor. Any advice?

I spoke with 9 on the phone narrowed it down to 4 I met in person.

Yes, I *knew*. The plan was to narrow to 2 and have DH meet them to give his input but after I met #4 I came home and said "The good news is I found our MW. The bad news is you don't get to meet the others" LOL My mind was made up.

One.

She attended the birth of an acquaintance of mine and is extremely well loved and respected where we live (major metropolitan city).

And, most importantly, I felt more confident in her as soon as I met her than in any other care provider I've ever spoken with.

My midwife is the 5th one I talked to and the last one that was even available! I liked the first one, didn't fit w/the 2nd, really didn't like the 3rd, the 4th was moving and not taking any clients, and then I met #5 and instantly felt relief. I love her and have loved her since the first second we met. I am so happy to have found her.

BTW she was not on any of the lists I had at first, but the midwife who was moving gave me her name and #.

I am so excited now, I was very nervous before I found her bc my last midwife who I had my first homebirth with was also someone I really loved. She spoiled me.

Definately look until you find someone you love, and if you don't love any of them atleast meet all of them and choose the best.

FWIW, if my midwife was the first one I interviewed and not the fifth, I would still have chosen her and just not met anyone else. I love her that much!

Happy homebirthing!

I spoke to three on the phone. I really like one of them and scheduled an interview at my house. DH and I both knew we wanted to birth with her 5 mins into the interview.

one. she came highly recommended from a local doula I respect when I explained what I was looking for. There are really only two to choose from in this area for homebirths anyways, and the other was also highly recommended and I would have probably been happy with her too.

But after meeting with this midwife Dh and I knew that she was the one for us because she was so inline with what we wanted - someone willing and comfortable with being 100% hands off.
Also, dh is a metal worker, and we found out she used to be a sheet metal worker too and that sold dh 100% too.

We only talked to one. She had attended the birth of a good friend the previous year and has a ton of information on her website, so I had a pretty good idea of what she was about before we even met with her.

I was pretty sure she was the one I wanted before I even met her, but after we met with her, DH and I both *knew* she was the one for us.

Just the one I have. For one thing, she's the only one in the area, and also we clicked very well. She has a very warm personality and is very helpful WRT my health care during pregnancy.

Well, originally we met with one and we were sure she was the one we wanted. We met her for a pre-arranged consultation after I had actually miscarried - but she kept the appt anyways just to talk through the m/c and see if we were a fit. That in itself was a big plus. I'd say I knew right away with her and my partner felt the same way. But we found out that if we got pregnant right away she would be unavailable for my due date. We stopped trying right away but it was too late and we were already pregnant so she was out. After that we met with two - the one she most recommended and another. We were torn between those two but ended up very happy with our decision. So 3 total, but if our first person had been available we probably would not have met with anyone else.

I spoke with one on the phone briefly when I first found out I was pregnant and then I interviewed two other ones. I ended up going with the third midwife - there was just something about her and the fact that she had lots of experience (almost as many years as I was old!).

We met with four in person. I don't know how many I spoke with over the phone. Once we met with the fourth one we knew they were the ones for us.

Before I even got pregnant I called an MW with some qs - and I *knew* just from 1 quick phone call that she would be my MW. But I live rather far from her, so I interviwed her and 4 others in person.
After the offical meeting and comparing her to the others, I knew even more. She was the only one I felt an instant connection to.
I asked all the qs about experience, etc - but it was her personality that made her my perfect match.

With my DD I called several but only interviewed one. She was the one I'd liked best from the phone calls and I liked her so much that I didn't feel the need to interview any others.

With this baby I called the three that are available in my area. One only takes one client a month, a large percentage of which are out of state, and she has another client due close to my due date and didn't feel she could take me. I interviewed the other two. One I didn't click with (didn't in the phone interview, either, but she's local and cheaper so I thought I'd meet her in person). The other I liked and hired, my only initial reservation was the fafct that she lives 1.5 hrs away and I'm anticipating a fairly quick (3-4 hr) labor in the winter.

Just one. It wasn't like a "SHES THE ONE" moment, but I was really comfortable with her credentials & liked her in general. So far I've been really pleased.

One. I got her name from an AP group; there were close to a dozen of her clients in that group and I liked her. That she had 8 home birthed babies of her own didn't hurt either.

One: I was ttc and had her brochure given to me 3x in 1 week...and at that point I was trying to figure out what to do because the one midwife in our area didn't build my confidence. So I called my future midwife and set up a date to talk. Both my husband and I knew she was it from the moment we met--she is amazing! (And so worth the 2 hr drive for appts!)
I find myself wishing I was pregnant just to be able to see her on a regular basis, lol!e are actually getting together this weekend and I am so excited! She hasn't seen dd for 9 mos.

Just one (group of midwives). They are really the only homebirth mw's in my area. We met with them at 29 weeks when preg with ds and decided instantly. And we are using them again this time around.
