i had a diaper service the first time around and i dont remember how many we used a day.. im hoping to do EC/diaper free but i know ill need diapers at first. im going to be cloth diapering, but we dont have a washing machine, so i will be rinsing then taking them to the laundrymat, oh joy.. so my question is.. how many will i need if i want to only wash diapers a few times a week? i have some fitteds but im thinking prefolds will probably be better for us, what do you think...

totally pf's!! Goodness, Zach's record was 22 in one day! You will need a good amount. I'd say at least a dozen a day in those early weeks, probably closer to 15-20 range a day when they don't sleep thru the night yet. Yeah, grab up 2-3 doz pf's and be done with it.

When are you gonna start ec'ing? I think that is so awesome but I always felt like I was doing it wrong or too late w/Ian. Zach is pretty easy going-he lets me know right away when he's wet and wants out of a dipe (or poos in it, for that matter). I've not really ec'ed him, though.

i've heard 30 is a good amount. i think i'm going for overkill and will hit up to 40 (however, 20 of these will be infant ubcpf), because i'll have 2 in dipes and i don't want to have to do laundry every day! :LOL

ahhh, I see. Yes, there are hemp pf's. I have old polar babies ones. THey don't snappi, though-you need pins. Is mom and me creations still around? They had all that froggy fleecer and littlelounging lizard flat and pf homemade hemp stuff, if I recall correctly. I've never done the indian pf's but they've always had raves. I did both the unbleached and bleached chinese cotton ones, some 4x6x4 and some 4x8x4. Premie pf's even fit the first week, lol. I don't know about OC pf's but I'm sure some mama has come up with some somewhere. DSQ's are usually chinese cotton, so far as I know. I know you can get flats in OC. Flats aren't much diff than pf's-they are squares or rectangles and they are all one absorbancy, like if it is 3 ply, then the whole flat is 3 ply, no extra layers in the middle "zone" kinda deal. I only ever did hemp flats. Do you see a trend here? Me likey the hemp! You can make any pf work. You just need a good cover.

I have 90 infant cpfs and this can get me through about 5-7 days. I use more when I use wool covers because i tend to change wool more often. now at 4 wks she's pooping less but I still use at least 10-18 diapers a day.

I would say make sure you have 18 for each 24hr period you don't want to wash. Like if you want to wash every 2 days go for 36. I have 36 nb fitteds and 24 onesize (for my toddler) but because I have 2 in diapers I seem to wash once a day, although I could go a lot longer if I wanted too.
Prefolds are great for a nb with a snappi, especially if you use a laundromat, because you can hang them to dry pretty quick, I really recommend getting a bunch of wool it really is nice for a nb.
When my daughter was a newborn, we went through 12-14 infant CPF's a day, and eventually (when she was 2-3 months old) were going through 16-18.

So my advice would be to get at least 36, if you want to do laundry every 2-3 days, and 48 if you'd like to do it every 3-4 days.

Personally, I prefer unbleached cotton CPF's, but it would probably be more environmentally sound to buy hemp or organic cotton, though I'm not sure organic cotton is even available. I'm too cheap to shell out the $$$ for hemp ($1.50 per prefold for cotton, vs. $6 or so for hemp... for 36 diapers, that's the difference between $54 and $216!).

I'd say we are going thru 12 a day and two Fuzzi Bunz at night. I think I have around 24-30 that I use and I wash every other day or everyday. I have 12 AIOs that I use for the diaper bag, too.

We have 2.5 dozen infant prefolds and another 1.5 dozen fitteds. We've been washing daily since DS was born and have come very close to running out a few times. I wish I'd gotten another dozen infant prefolds, but he's starting to slow down a bit so we're doing better on not running out of diapers.

I would say going for prefolds with a newborn is the best way to do it. Newborns seem to hate being wet for any length of time, in my experience , and so it doesn't really matter about the absorbancy at that age, they only stay in them for such a short time. And they outgrow the fitteds so fast too, that the most economical way to go is to use prefolds. Plus, they look so adorable in little pf's! I had indian Pf's and Chinese, and I actually prefered the CPF's. The IPF's were fluffier and *nicer* but I actually had a hard time using a snappi on them, they would always unclip. And I found that the cpf's lasted longer in weight for some strange reason. I think they might have a bit more stretch to them. Maybe I just got some crappy IPF's but that was my experience.

But adding to that I might have say 6-12 fitteds for nighttime, or even aio's. I hated struggling with the pf's at night, and if you are sleeping with two it is nice to get the change done as quickly and with as little fuss as possible (so as not to wake anyone up ) Or say a few pockets just to have ready in the middle of the night. I did this with my ds and he was sleeping over five hours straight at a few weeks old. He would wake to nurse but I wouldn't have to change him thirty times... I think the fleece topping (in a pocket, say) at night makes a big difference to how they sleep, and you

Did that make any sense? This heat is getting to me...

I have a newborn and I use both fitteds and prefolds. Fuzzi bunz for going out but not all the time because I don't own very many. I wash more than a couple times a week that is for sure! I do have a washer dryer. My stock is 13 prefolds and 12 fitteds. I have three fuzzi bunz for going out but we don't go out much so that has been plenty really. If I ever stay out long enough to need more I just use a fitted.

I wash every other day or every day. It depends. I could always wash every other day but I usually don't like to leave them. I'm just wierd like that.

My baby is already over 11 pounds and the fitteds are still working for her. I am still on the smaller snap setting. Her tummy isn't quite that big yet despite her weight so they look like they will last a bit longet yet. I think she is gonna grow out of my newborn prefolds before she grows out of the fitteds! I have a hard time getting them to close. The prefolds will always work great for stuffers though so they were a good buy either way, IMO.
