My (nearly) 3 week old son seems to latch well and eats like the proverbial pig, but several times a week (not daily, but nearly), usually in the evenings, he'll have a back arching shrieking fit which I can only interpret as a gas pain, I think it's intestinal since he doesn't seem to need to burp, or at least it takes pretty much forever to get a burp out of him and sometimes it's preceded by a fart/bm that seems to stop the fussing. The whole time he wants to nurse, but will latch and then pop off and cry, or cry around the nipple so it seems to be that he's nursing for comfort at that point, not that he's hungry poor little guy! It just breaks my heart because it takes soooo long to make him feel better.

I've been told a couple of things - one is that these are classic baby reflux symptoms, but I find it very unlikely that a bf baby would be experiencing reflux. Does anybody know anything about this?

I've also been told that a certain amount of intestinal gas is normal when normal bacteria start to inhabit the baby's intestines from about the 2 week mark.

I see my midwife on Thursday so will be asking about this then but if anybody knows anything I can do, should I be giving him gripe water or Ovol, is there one nursing position better than others so that he swallows less air, etc?

I'm doing baby massage already.

Congratulations on your new baby!

Mine does
Not badly though, so maybe the BM helps somewhat. Maybe she would be worse on formula. I think it has a lot to do with the baby's development of that muscle between the stomach and the eosophagus.

And yes newborns are very gassy.

Kellymom.com has good info on this:
