How much would you be willing to pay for beautiful photographs?

I am finally going to do it! I have been thinking of this for years and now I can finally do it! Now I have finally the guts to do it

I was laoways into photography and I LOVE taking photos of babies, kids and portraits in general. I keep taking photos of babies in our AP group and they keep coming back and asking for my business card, so I decided to go for it and take a chance.

I am not a profesional photographer, but I am not an amateur either. As for now I don't have a darkroom yet, but in next year or so we will be buying a house and I will be setting up one so I can do custom hand made photos in my own darkroom. Of course by that time my skills will be way better and prices will be much higher.

But for now I have came up with 2 different packages for my future clients to pick from and I'd like to know your opinion. Would you be willing to pay theseprices for what I am offering? Take look please and tell me:

Package #1:

30 photos size 4x6 (each photo is twice, that means total of 60 photos) +
3 photos size 5x7 +
1 photo size 8x10

Price: $120

Package #2:

50 photos 4x6 (again each will be twice = 100photos)
+ 5 photos 5x7
+ 3 photos 8x10

Price: $170

BOth packages can be either color or B&W or mix of both. Choice of frame, no frame or art edges. I will be taking photos of babies, children, family photos, (no weddings and such for now) in their own home, yard or park or anywhere else they want. I will be traveling there - all included in the price.

DO you think it's a good price? I think it's fantastic, b/c from what I have seen prof. photographer who'd be willing to come to your house charges around $400 just for the sitting fee!! Plus photos, which are usually around $100 for abour 5x7 size - one photo!! I know these are profesional, but who on earth can afford that?
I also saw woman how does this and she charges $300 for the whole thing. I don't know for how many photos, but I personally could not afford $300.
I tihnk my prices are extremly good, do you?

Please tell me, if you have any suggestions!!!

THANKS!

Do 15 shots (30 photos then...heck, I wouldn't even double!), take out a 5x7 and throw in 8 wallets, drop the price by $20 and I'll buy it, but only if it's on Kodak!

My aunt is a photographer...check out her site...I don't know if she has prices on it though.

www.amaryimage.com

She totally started from scratch and just kept getting her name out and doing every job she could and now she is doing really well!!

Good luck!

I think your package/pricing is MORE than reasonable...TOO reasonable!!! Give your *art* some credit. I know you want it to be affordable but don't cut yourself short!

The prices you listed seem very reasonable.

When I have had a professional photographer take pics of ds, the sitting fee alone was $100-$150. Then there was a charge for each pic. 4x6 were I think $5-$10 each, 5x7 $20 each, 8x10 $40 each, and 11x17 were like $50. I don't know if those are exact prices, but it was close.

I know it ended up costing us about $300 to do the sitting and get a few 5x7's for christmas gifts.
your prices are too cheap.
Look around at other photogs. in your area who offer something comprable to what you are planning on offering. see what they charge and then go a bit cheaper then them.

you do not want to charge too little and do TONS of work for no profit at all.

'BOth packages can be either color or B&W or mix of both. Choice of frame, no frame or art edges'

This is what you may want to charge a little extra for as they are considered extras (frames, art edges, sepia etc...) You may want to make one choice (other then normal color, no edges) standard as a special thing you do, but when you start to give people too many choices it takes them a long time to get back to you and then you are stuck with work taking up space that should be in someone's home.

'Do 15 shots (30 photos then...heck, I wouldn't even double!), take out a 5x7 and throw in 8 wallets'

that is good advice. You don't want too many photos because then people get overwhelmed can't/don't want to make any more orders because they can't decide. AND kids get too cranky if you 'work' them too much.

You want to make it short, sweet, fun, and affordable.

Good Luck

Can you travel to Arizona? I would definitely pay that for great pictures of my son. I hesitate because of the high cost of professional pics. I never like the studio portraits and ones at my house or a place or my choosing would be heaven
I like that idea. Now if only I could find someone where I live.

You must have loooots of photos of your family, don't you?

That is exactly what I was thinking - I don't want too many photos b/c then people can get overwhelmed. But on the other side I don't wanna waist my day driving somewhere and take one roll of film. Kids' should be ok, I don't reallt like setting up situations, like studio portraits, so I would just spend some time with the family and take photos of their kids running around, playing, their favorite time, like bathing ir on the swing....something like that.

I know, but trust me, I would have a profit. I am not doing the photos by hand, they will be done in photo lab until I get my own darkroom, but even then I still have color done in lab. I agree I do wanna put price on my skills, but for me it is an oportunity to learn more then anything at this point and gaining lots of experience and customers.
I need to make enough profit to buy better equipment. On the other side I don't wanna be too cheap so people would think I probably suck if I can't put a good price on my work.....KWIM?
:

Anyway, after your advise I have added another package:

15 photos 4x6 (all twice) and 8 wallet photos for $90 - does it sound ok?
And I'd still keep the other packages.

Something it's a big family - like 3 or 4 (or more) kids it's easy to shoot 3-4 rolls of film, it goes by really fast, so I think I still wanna keep the big (50 photos)
package as an option.

Thank you again!

Maybe it has to do with the area you're in, but for Chicago, those prices are VERY reasonable. Anyway, I think it might be a good idea to charge a sitting fee-- flat rate. If you don't, someone might say they don't want any pics and then you've made zero money. There's a photographer around here who charges a high flat rate, but he takes as many hours as you need. You don't need to make your sitting fee high since you're aiming for affordable, but I'd charge something. I think the flat rate + fee per pic makes it easier than packages.

Also, if you haven't already, maybe ask about this in the forum dedicated here to people with their own biz. They may be able to help you figure out hidden costs (for example, upkeep of equipment, maintaining a website) that could better help you judge your costs.

Your work is lovely!
Pavlina - your photos are very good. Keep at it and I think you'll do very nicely for yourself. People think photography is an easy art but it's really not! I really liked looking at your portfolio...good stuff!!
