I think there is a wide range of normal. At 12 months my DD nursed at least every 2 hours during the day although if we were out and about she could possibly go 3-4 hours without nursing. She nursed probably 2-3 times at night but then would wake up in the early mornings for a nurse-a-thon.

Now she is almost 15 months and nurses much less during the day. Even if I offer she often refuses. But some days she wants to nurse all day, so...it's hard to say what the average is. She likes to eat solid food a lot more than she did 3 months ago. The nighttime nursing is about the same. It varies.

Reid nursed every 2 hours (day and night) until recently... he's 16 months and I noticed a change around 13-14 months. Now he's only nursing a few times during the day (maybe 3-5) and then almost all night (probably 5 times or so). But it's not every.two.hours like it used to be.

At 1 Sophie fed more than she did as a newborn
: HAve you read 'Mothering your nursing toddler" by Norma Jane Bumgarner? I highly recommend it all nursing mothers. It is lovely, reasuring about the plain old normality of the different todder nursing behaviours. I think 'normal' is subjective

Thanks for the book rec! My baby nurses about ev 2-4 hours now. Sometimes she'll nurse a lot more if we're somewhere strange. Sometimes she nurses less when she's distracted with life.

I asked because one of my mama friends said her baby only nurses for naps, in the am and at night.

I guess I won't worry. I'll just go with the flow of what DD wants to do. She has been eating a lot of solids lately.

It varies for my younggest who is now 15 months old. If he is busy discovering and playing he will only nurse a few times in a day but often if he is feeling clingy or does not eat too mnay solids he will want to nurse evry half hour to every hour. He is sensitive and tends to seek out nursing as comfort.

DD is in the process of being slowly, and gently, weaned. So she only nurses one time before bed. I would nurse her more, but she doesn't eat (much) solid food if she nurses more often.

ETA: She's 20 months and I'm planning on weaning her at 2.

Smart baby, she understands that breastmilk is better nutrition.

My ds (12 months) nurses about once every 3 hours during the day, which is the exact same amount he has nursed the past several months. He has just started increasing his solids, but I have seen no change in his nursing. However, I just offer about every 3 hours and he accepts. He never asks on his own. It would be interesting to see what would happen if I didn't offer. (Not that I plan on doing that, although I do have to go back to work soon and I'm not sure if I'll need to pump while I'm gone or just nurse more when I'm with him.)
