I've felt like I'm nursing all the time, so I decided to keep track today. In the past 12 hours, I've nursed 9 times...and dd likes to nurse for a looooong time--I have one 10-minute nursing in there, but most are over 20 minutes and four times it was 40-50 minutes (which only ended b/c I took her off). If I try to take her off (b/c it seems like she's comfort nursing), she screams. I can often occupy her for 20-30 minutes, but then she wants to eat again. Is this normal? I wouldn't mind so much, except that I have severely injured nipples right now (due to Raynaud's), and the more she nurses, the less able they are to here. She's 7 weeks, BTW...and not having a growth spurt. This is just normal. She does sleep for a long time at night--usually one 6-hour stretch, sometimes a little less or a little more, then a meal, followed by one 2-3 hour stretch.

That sounds very normal to me. Ds seemed to nurse all day most days. This eased up around 4-5 months if I remember correctly. But definitely in those early weeks, it was pretty non-stop. Sorry about the pain you're in, that's very, very hard. You're a brave and loving mommy!

That sounds totally normal to me. Ds was nursing at least that much for months. Only recently (9 mo.) has he been nursing every 2-3 hours instead. I never keep track though. He eats when he wants, and it's just part of the day. You're doing great! Mary

My DD is now 9 mths, but when she was an infant, she nursed at least 45 minutes every single time, about 7 times a day--i remember i used to worry that i couldn't get in that eighth time that everyone talks about, but we couldn't have possibly because she nursed for so long and from both breasts, too! she also grew 6 inches in 3 months, from birth, so she probably needed it!

she loved, loved to nurse (and still does!). people, including one of my midwives to my surprise, warned me against "comfort nursing," saying that i'd never get her off my boobs later on, but how could i deny her? so, yes, she's still a comfort nurser, and yes, sometimes it's tiring, but i know she is happy and bonded to me, so i'm ok with it. so, it sounds to me like your dc is doing fine.

on a related note, I had a lot of nipple issues too, including Reynaud's, although i never had it officially diagnosed as such. After about week 8, though, the Reynaud's started to go away until it finally disappeared entirely. i think the fact that as she grew her mouth grew, too, helped, so that she didn't compress my nipples anymore. Hopefully this will be the case for you, too.

Evelyn used to nurse that often, too. It seemed like the first 12 weeks were all something like a growth spurt! I remember my mom would ask me, "Are you sure she is really nursing and not just playing?" But, she wanted to nurse and cried if I tried to take her off.

Then suddenly she started nursing for only 7-10 minutes! And sometimes only on one side! I was very weirded out and thought something was wrong... but no, she just had figured out how to do it more effectively, maybe, or she was just done needing to nurse that long.

I'm sorry to hear that you are in pain, though. That must make it more difficult. Good luck to you, mama!

As soon as DS finished with his 3 months growth spurt he started going much longer stretches and finished eating very quickly (though my milk flows fast so that accounts for that). He goes 2.5 to 3.5 hours during the day now and only eats for 15 or less minutes usually. He goes 4-6 hours at night.

I've had exactly that experience. I think sometimes it is that she's nursing more effectively, and sometimes she's just too busy learning about her world to be bothered much with the daytime nursing. Unfortunately, I've seen an increase in night-nursing, when things are less interesting for her!

My first two were very efficient nursers and rarely nursed for more than 15 minutes (outside of BooBah's first night and growth spurts) at a time. Very early on, they started sleeping for 3-4 hour stretches.

Bella, on the other hand, has a crappy latch which not only has the effect of making nursing painful, but means she takes a heck of a lot longer to do it. A nursing session with her often lasts up to 45 minutes (see why I spend so much time in front of the computer?! ), sometimes even longer. She doesn't seem to nurse as often as my older children did, but I must say that if she's still on the breast after an hour and a half, I have to assume that she's not getting enough and I'll give her a bottle of expressed milk if I have it, or try to pump the other breast so that I can give her one. When I do this, she often inhales the bottle as though she'd been starving and falls promptly to sleep.
