Ever since my baby was about two weeks old, he hasn't really taken naps during the day. He might have one or two twenty minute cat naps, or, if I put him in the stroller and walk around, he might sleep for a few hours - but only as long as I keep walking.

He gets quite fussy at nighttime, and I'm pretty sure he is overtired..I know I am!

About how long should a new baby sleep during the day?

My DD took 4 naps a day at that age. She was usually only awake for 1-2 hours and then needed to sleep again. Her naps ranged from 45 - 90 min.

The key for me was watching for her cues. She would rub her face back and forth against my chest, or I would catch a couple yawns and know that if I swaddled and rocked her, she would fall asleep. I never waited for fussiness because that usually meant she was over-tired and would struggle to fall asleep.

I have a 10 week old right now. She typically takes 3-4 naps a day - and they range from 30 min - 2 hours. Keep in mind, I have to hold in her the Moby to get her to sleep - then I have to walk with her in the moby for at least 45 min before I put her down and then she will stay asleep!

Good luck to you

My little guy is about 12 weeks and for example today he took a nap from 7:45-8:30, from 9:45 to 10:30, from 11:50 to 1:20 from 2:45 to 4:45, so that was 4 naps and about 5 hours of sleep. Then I put him to bed around 6:45 and he'll probably sleep until 6:30 tomorrow. I find that we usually get about 4 naps, but sometimes it only 3 if he takes a really long nap while I wear him. He did that on Saturday when we were having a garage sale. Sometimes if he'll only stay asleep for 40 minutes at a time, then he'll end up taking like 5 naps instead.

As far as your guy, while all children are different (my dd had a much lower sleep need than a lot of babies) I think he probably needs more total day time sleep than he's getting. 9 weeks is still very little and they need a lot of sleep. What's your current nap routine like? How often do you try to put him to sleep? Maybe there's something you could do differently to help him take better naps.

His sleep routine is like this - He usually wakes up around 9 am, and I nurse him and we kind of doze until 10 to avoid getting out of bed. Then he will be awake until around 1 pm until 3 pm or do, and then stays awake until 9 or 10..and sleeps in stretches through the night. (Just waking up to nurse)

He doesn't get fussy during the day, and it wasn't really until I started thinking about it that I realized he doesn't get enough sleep! Usually I take him for a walk around 1, which is what makes him fall asleep, and he will stay sleeping as long as I stay walking.

I've managed to bump him up another nap during the morning... Now if I nurse and cuddle him in bed around 12, I can get him to sleep for about an hour or so. I started walking him around 3... now I just need a way to get him to sleep in the early evening! He just gets so excited when DH comes home from work, and likes to play... My husband can usually swaddle and rock him to sleep around 6, but he won't stay asleep for any length of time until 9 pm...

My 9 week old will sometimes sleep all day (and all that night!) but is sometimes awake for the whole day. I think right now they're going through huge growth spurts so often, it throws off their cycle. At least with my LO!

Hope he does take naps eventually though...it's exhausting when they don't!
