thought i'd ask you toddler mamas who have BTDT a baby question...hope that's ok.

we have a crib, but co-sleep. it has never been used, and dd is almost 8 months. we don't even store things in it! just looks cute, but the room is so cluttered that no one goes in there anyway. she just always sleeps with me, and i love it, and so does she....
so why am i not taking the stupid thing down already?

so i'm wondering if it would make sense to have her co-sleep with us until she gets a toddler bed? if she wants to use it, that is. how old can they be to use one (i remember none of this with my first!).

That's exactly what we did with dd. She's 20 mo. now and spends half the night in her bed (sometimes less) and then crawls into our bed to nurse and sleeps with us for the rest of the night. It works well for us, I nurse her to sleep in her bed and since it is right next to ours, she doesn't seem to mind being there. She naps there too. I'd say we started at about 17 mo. with the bed. Good luck!

FWIW, we never used a toddler bed. DS co-slept until he was 20 months. At that time, we made a pallet for him on the floor using several thick comforters and sheepskin, and he started out the night there. He'd always climb into our bed sometime during the night.

He's now 2 1/2, and just 2 months ago got a big boy bed - a real bed, as opposed to a toddler bed. He loves it, and has been sleeping there all night long most nights! He comes in to our bed in the morning.

Maggie "co-slept" with us (her crib had the front removed and was pushed up against our bed side car style) until she was 20 mos. We moved her to a regular full size bed because that's what we had- didn't want to go buy a toddler bed. We started with the box spring and mattress on the floor and when she got a little taller we put the frame on it. She usually climbs in our bed around 6am (sometimes earlier depending on the night) and we snuggle until wake up time. Good luck with your transition when it's time!

We did a similar thing to Sarah. When DS was 12m, we got a twin mattress and put it on the floor in the corner of our room, with our queen right up against it. So, he has plenty of room, but can only get out at the foot of his bed. He climbs up with us at some point (our queen is on the box springs on the floor) and spends part of the night there as well. We are all sleeping so much better without him kicking all night long.

My DD has been sleeping in her toddler bed in our room since she was 14 months old. She starts out in her bed and then sometime during the night climbs in bed with us. Works great.

Sounds reasonable to me. We had a crib set up, but David hated it so we co-slept from the beginning. When he started crawling around, I was concerned about him falling off our bed so we got a regular twin mattress and placed it directly on the floor. He and I co-slept there from the time he was 10 months old until I was 4 months pregnant. At that point, he and I didn't fit well in the twin anymore. So we moved back to the queen bed (he was about 20 months old) and we've been there ever since. He does continue to nap in his twin and he does just fine there.
