Should they be loose, tight? Do they stretch over time? I've bought two soakers that the measurements are correct for my babe but I think they are too snug? I have shorts but they are made from merino and they fit her with room to grow.

I think it depends upon how you like them to fit. I knit mine with a bit of room to grow - but not a lot, because the knit stretches so much. Plus, I don't want the leg openings to be too big, that leads to leaking.

It's hard to say, because when I knit soakers, the soaker measurement is always smaller than the babe's actual measurement - and then it stretches over the diaper. I usually guage size by rise. I like the soaker to be at least 1" over the rise of my diaper. Judging size this way usually means we'll get 6+ months of wear out of a soaker. My girls just grew out of a soaker I knit for them in Sept. It still fits them around, but all our diapers hang out the top!
