I'm pretty strict about things, but still early on (8w2d). The things I've cheated on are caffeine (I've had about five glasses of iced tea in the past four weeks) and tune (I had a craving for it yesterday). I've told myself that in this first trimester when I'm feeling gross with morninng sickness, I'll be more lenient, and then buckle down once I'm feeling better. We'll see how that goes

I'd say I'm pretty lax about some of the rules. Especially when it comes to sushi. I just love it and eat it whenever I can. However I do avoid alcohol and smoke, and I don't eat tuna. I am also bad about caffine. I really need my chocolate, I just can't help myself. What can I say, I'm bad.

well, i didn't exercise and drank frozen cokes to settle my stomach but other than that i was a pretty model pregnant woman. no alcohol, no smoking or being near smokers, no hot tubs, no soft cheeses, no deep water fish, you get the picture.

I voted "moderate," but I'm actually closer to the 100% (but since I'm only about 98%, I didn't think I should vote 100%!
).

My field is microbiology, and I know too much about listeriosis, so I *do* try to avoid any food that could be risky (even though I *love* chevre)... it's just not worth it, and there's lots of other food out there. Something not often mentioned along with the soft cheeses, sushi, cold cuts/hot dogs, etc. is that stuff from a cold deli line or salad bar isn't the greatest, either.

I am a homebrewer, too, and it's hard for me to give up the occasional beer (I'm a super light drinker, but I *do* miss it). So I have a very occasional sip when dh is drinking one of my favorites...

In my pregnancy with ds, when I'd get super constipated, a cup of coffee would always do the trick for me.... I know, TMI... (But it added up to a total of maybe 10-15 cups in the whole pregnancy.)

And even though sometimes *talk* about junk food, I'm really pretty good about what I eat... I'm pretty serious about "doing the right thing"...

I exercised a lot in my pg with ds... and in this one, I'm dragging my sorry behind out for a brisk walk every day because I know it will pay off in the last trimester. (I had a friend who was pg at the same time as me before, and at the end, I was hiking, swimming, and going for 5+ mile walks, and she couldn't walk 1 city block...)

I have to remember this time to send someone out for a chocolate milkshake after the birth.

I'm pretty much in line with Kristine (we seem to be in alignment with a few things right now
:
). I'm very strict about the bacteria stuff - cheeses, sushi (although I have caught myself salivating over a picture on more than one occassion), deli meat, etc. My husband has forbidden me to dig in the garden - we have a cat - to which I give a dramatic sigh and say "Okay, dear, if you say so..."
(Like I have the energy or motivation for gardening). I don't do hot baths or hot tubs, and I will probably not ski this year
. We telemark, so if I fall, I fall forward on my belly, so I don't want to take the chance.

However, I do have sip of my DH's beer on occassion. And like cicerosum, I try to head off my migraines with a half-cup of coffee. Unfortunately, plain water is often icky to me, so I mix it with juice, and I'm catching myself doing less and less mixing. Lemonade is a particular weakness. And in my last trimester, I'll probably have a sip or two of wine.

What I am finding in this pregnancy is that I haven't had the cravings that I had with my first - like ice cream and sugar. But, likewise, I haven't had the aversions either. My stomach doesn't turn at the smell of coffee or beer, so I still have the occassional taste for those.

But, all in all, I'm pretty good.

I'm pretty good - I"m vegetarian, so avoiding deli meats and raw fish is no probably. Also I don't drink, avoid sugar, and try to exercise moderately - though it's harder now because from weeks 6-12, they didn't want me doing any exercise because I"ld been having some spotting. So now I'm out of shape and can't do as much. The stuff I'm not doing well on - I threw up my prenatal vitamins almost every day through the first trimester and also drink coke sometimes as it seems to help the morning sickness. I don't do more than one can a day and usually only half. I've had the occasional coffee or mocha - but maybe once every couple weeks.

I'm pretty strict. My big weakness is caffine. I have cut myself down to only one coke a day. I have a slight adversion to it so it's not so bad. I actually had a piece of deli meat in my mouth today at my moms and spit it out. I remember reading a story about something bad and deli meats.

I just wanted to point out to you ladies who worry about the caffeine in chocolate that a Hershey bar has about as much caffeine as a cup of *decaf* coffee. So, unless you just eat chocolate by the pound, you really don't have anything to worry about.

peace, Beth

I said I'm moderately strict cause I believe in moderation for most everything and have researched enough to know that most of what we're advised against is extremes.

BUT I also have ulcers and most of the no-no's for pregnancy make me feel horrible normally, so it's a little easier to avoid them. I am a chocoholic though and have broken down and had some, but paid for it dearly later
I will be having some brie, too, but I cut off all the rind and then cook the innards, so I figure that reduces any risks a lot.

I would say that I'm lax. I was strict w/preg. one and this one and preg. two, I follow my own rules. (Does this count? )
Actually while I think there are general precautions to take, I'm sure there are plenty that are our own DD's will be taking that we have no idea of now, as well as ones we follow that they will totally discount as old wives tales. So let's just say I follow common sense and moderation.

I would eat sushi if I really wanted it....i'd go to a place I trust though and had been before. I eat lots of cooked rolls though. I love eel!
I have sat in a jacuzzi...but get out when I feel too hot or woozy. I eat soft cheeses. I would drink a small portion of alcohol and did last preg. when I wanted it, but haven't had any desire at all this time.
I just play it by ear and listen to my body.

I'm pretty good, but I do do the soft cheese occasionally. I will probably have a glass of wine or a beer somewhere in my pregnancy, but right now the idea revolts me. I hate the smell of it on dh's breath. I don't do caffeine except in chocolate and I am trying to avoid that this time.

It's funny KKmama mentioned it, I had a huge sundae in the hospital while I was still in the delivery room and they had taken my baby away. Ice cream was the only thing that made being in there by myself when I should have been with dd halfway okay. I may have to have another one after this baby is born..while I'm b/fing of course.

I am relatively strict. I am vegetarian but have been really craving fish a lot. My first pregnancy I lived in Japan and ate Sushi.. the Japanese do it so why can't we? This time around I plan on cutting out a lot of carbs and eating more protein and veggies. I gained too much weight last time and don't plan on doing it this time!

I plan on sticking to decaf until the first trimester is done, then I will have a cappuccino occasionally. As long as I balance it with enough water I think it is ok. Wine and beer... yuck. The thought makes me sick right now! I might have a glass of wine near the end but we will see.

I'd say I'm a moderate...
I do exercise 5-6 days a week, drink tons of water, & eat mostly organic homemade food...
I began drinking a cup of coffee a day in the second trimester (it is organic coffee though
). I had sushi once, but I had only one piece of raw fish (yellowtail~ my favorite!), all the rest was cooked, I eat chevre about 2-3 x a week, I had feta a couple times, and I have had 3 glasses of wine so far, I take hot baths...
I don't eat much chocolate or sodas, I don't smoke or hang around smokers, I don't like deli meat, I know I am immune to toxiplasmosis~ so no worries there...
It is very interesting though to hear different peoples perspectives and practices.
Especially different cultures. Friends I have had from Europe were much much more lax than Americans when it came to alcohol, smoking, soft cheeses, etc
I used to work in a Japanese resteraunt w/ a lot of women from Japan, and the pregnant ones ate tons of sushi~ all the "forbidden" selections, almost daily!
I think I was a bit more lax when I was pg w/ ds, but also not as educated in some things. I ate sushi about once a month, I ate a lot of tuna in the first trimester, I drank about 2 cups of coffee or tea a day, I ate soft cheeses whenever I wanted, I had wine about once a month, I took tons of hot baths and plenty of whirlpools, & I painted the entire inside of my house and refinished all the wood floors (nasty smelling stuff!)...
