How to get out smell...

568 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  WickidaWitch
Okay, long story short--
I stopped cloth diapering dd when she was 4 months old. She is almost 4 years old now. She is potty trained but was wearing huggies pull ups at night. She wets A LOT at night. She had persistent yeast infection for about 6 months, so I got some fuzzi buns with doublers and kissaluvs super soakers. They do a good job not leaking and her infection is gone.
Problem: Super urine smell even after washing.
I wash them every 4 days, dry pail. I pre-wash in cold plain water, then soak and pre-wash again but with a cup of apple cider vinegar. Then I do a full wash with free and clear, then a second rinse. We thought it was our old washer and so we bought a new one. The new one has eliminated a good amount of the smell, but it is still there. They are making her entire bed and jammies smell like pee! Any suggestions?

I think you probably need to strip the diapers. Mine started to get stinky after washing, so I stripped them last night and the stink seems to be gone. All I did was load the dipes in the washer, add a squirt of dishsoap, hot wash, and then about 5 hot rinses. People say you need to rinse till you don't see any suds. Hope that helps!
Just a couple of thoughts....
you may try to wash a little more frequently. I've not gone 4 days before with my diapers, so I'm not sure, but that might help cut down on the stink.
Also, some people have found that the "free & clear" detergents have a greater tendency toward buildup then other types of detergents....not everyone finds this to be true though. You may want to try doing a really good stripping of the dipes ---- several hot washes with no detergent--- and then experiment with a different detergent just to see if that helps.

hmm... I don't have an option for hot rinse on my washer, just hot wash/cold rinse. So they always get rinsed in cold. Could that be part of the issue? The dipes are pretty new, I bought them new and we've only been using them about 2 months. There are only 4 of them, and she only wears 1 per night, so that's why only every 4 days. Once the baby comes in June I'll be washing dipes every 1-2 days... is there a way to "strip" them without a hot rinse? I feel like such a rookie... I've never even heard of stripping before!
Thanks!
I don't have a hot rinse either. I just run several hot washes...the rinse following the wash is cold....but then another hot wash...etc etc.....

You could always turn the knob back to (the start of the cycle)add the hot water then put it back to the rinse part when the washer is full.

Maybe if you rinse the dipes in the sink in the a.m to get some of the pee out before putting them in the pail that might help with the smell problem?? I've never left my dipes for 4 days so i dont know.
