Now that our garden is done.....the fruit orchard is the next thing to tackle.

Any book recommendations (or website) that will help us properly plan our fruit orchard (trees, berries, nuts, etc.)...

TIA

I want to say there's a book called the Backyard Orchardist that's supposed to be good. There's got to be other books out there. I'm more of a haphazard kind of gal and just stick things where I think they'll work space-wise.

Penn State has some great books, and they can be either purchased or downloaded (free I think!)

Fruit Production for the Home Gardener $12.00
This 186-page guide, which replaces AGRS-60, Small-Scale Fruit Production, is a resource for people with one acre or less who wish to produce fruit on a small scale and who are not legally licensed to use pesticides.

It is really important to select apple varieties carefully - we get cedar apple rust which is no fun. We could have avoided that with more careful fruit selection. Next time (if there is one!) I will plant more pears, less apples. Our Kieffer pear does great every year, we are still waiting on over half of our apple trees. (We have a mix of dwarf and semi-dwarf root stock.)

With fruits, it's really important to find out which varieties work well in your local area. Different places have different diseases, insects, etc. Here in the U.S., we have County Agricultural Extension offices that can help with this information, but I don't know what the Canadian equivalent would be. Local nurseries are also good sources of info.
