My 11yo has taken up a sudden interest in selecting a career. She wants to know what jobs are available, what kinds of training she would need for each one, etc. She also wants to know what subjects she should be focusing on to get into various careers, and what kinds of scholarships are typically awarded.

I didn't think about college choices until my junior year of high school, and I didn't really think about careers until my sophmore year of college. I have no clue how to help her out with this!

For now, I'm looking at this more as a "social studies" exercise rather than actual career planning- I know that a lot can change in the next 7 years even if she doesn't realize that!

The library has a career outlook handbook. I'm not sure what would be the online equivalent. What a fun thing to research!

At that age I loved browsing through those college guides at the library, that tell you all of the majors available, about each college, the scholarships available, and so on.

If she's research-y, she may enjoy doing a project to pick a few careers and look online and in the library, and perhaps speak with someone in the field about how to get into it - could she job shadow? That would be fun!
