I can't figure it out. I am using a pinch of salt in warm water, I have to be careful about salt in my diet and I cannot afford to keep having it go down my throat!!

How do I get it to come back down? A couple times I had a few drips out the other nostril, but for the most pare it just goes down my throat!

i have been having sinus trouble and I really need to figure this thing out. It helps slightly but since I'm not using it to it's fullest extent i'm still suffering from sinus pain

I'm no expert but I've used it successfully several times and had lessons from my dh who is an expert neti pot user and loves it. It sounds like you need to tilt your head forward more. He says it's okay to have a little bit running down your throat but most of it should come out your nose. Getting the right angle (to the side, forward and hanging over the sink or bowl or whatever) just takes practice.

Also, he uses more than a pinch of salt (it must be iodized salt and not sea salt), I think and also baking soda (not sure how much). He also bought some Neti Wash, not for everyday use but for acute cases like yours, I believe. He found all the info by googling.

In my experience learning to use a neti pot when you have acute sinus trouble is a really bad idea. It can have a difficult learning curve for some people, and learning during an infection can actually cause a lot more harm than good.
I'd wait until you are fully recovered and unstuffed, then learn to use it with clear sinuses. it is so much easier, and then you will know exactly what to do later during an infection or congestion.

You should also be using more salt. I use 2 grams of unrefined sea salt salt per 8 ounce of water. That works out to about 1/2 teaspoon more or less depending on the texture of the salt being used. You are wanting to create an "isotonic solution," a solution that has the same concentration of salt as does your blood and cells. Too much salt is too drying, too little salt is quite irritating to the sensitive sinuses tissues.

To my understanding the opposite is true: I'm pretty sure you should NOT used iodized salt, and do use unrefined sea salt.

It's hard to explain but, you have to make sure you are completely breathing through your mouth, blocking off the holes from your nasal passage on the INSIDE of your mouth. (I know that doesn't make sense but, that's the only way I can describe it
)

Here is a vid that might help you-

Also, they sell neti pot salt that is sea salt and it has no anticaking agents in it

Sea salt is actually very healthy for you even for those that need to watch their sodium intake. It depends on the kind of salt/sodium.
