Hi mamas--I'm pretty new to this board. By way of introduction: I'm a 37 yo mother of a completely unvaxed 20 week old DD. I'm also an MD, in the last half of my psychiatry residency, and (as I've mentioned in other threads) I've done a complete 180 on my own position regarding vaccines--as recently as October, I was advising my sister not to skip any vaccines with her newborn son! Fortunately, I got the chance to research this on my own--my sister skipped the Hep B at birth (thank god) but was persuaded by her ped to do a delayed schedule (I've since told her we're never vaxing, and I think she'll stop too) on some of the earlier 2 month vaxes.

Anyway, I know it's asking about a very personal and emotional experience for those of you with vax-injured children to share your stories, but I thought such a thread could be helpful to those just beginning research. I find such stories absolutely heartbreaking and infuriating, but also they inspire me to possibly change the arc of my career and work with autistic kids and alternative therapies (thinking specifically of a fellowship at the MIND institute at UC Davis, +/- a child & adolescent fellowship). I've tried to do some peer education about this issue and I dream of a world where doctors are more partners than impediments to treating autistic kids.

thanks mamas...

Thankfully, I am unable to answer your question. I have a 3.5 yo and 21 mo that are currently unvaxed. But I am struggling and am undecided with a few vaxes. Could you maybe post another thread telling your story and providing links, books and sources? I am really struggling with Tetanus as we spend a lot of time on my inlaws farm with horses, chickens and lots of rusty stuff to injure one's self on.

Thanks!
I have personally had contact with a few negative effects that were possibly from vacs (aside from several friends who's little ones have autism and who knows if it was from vacs or not)

My best friends dd who just turned 5 got TYPE 1 DIABETES from a respiratory infection that was brought on from her vac of PREVNAR. She would have gotten the diabetes later around 10-13 years old, but instead it came at 18 months old. She has been on an insulin pump for 3 years and her's is really bad. It's an hour by hour thing... more insulin, more carbs, less carbs, more insulin etc. Her mama does an amazing job with her, and they eat REALLY healthy (all fresh/from scratch etc) and so far they have kept her from any damage but she unfortunately has several more years than most kids do before getting it.

My ds Caleb had a hard time after his MMR, (he was around 18 months I want to say?) he seemed not himself ever again honestly and I remember asking Dh, is he always going to be grumpy now? He also got a high fever.
Caleb has Sensory Integration Disorder, OCD, and an Anxity Disorder.
dh and I really really believe a lot of it could have been a reaction to the MMR... heck I have no clue what he had along with the MMR that day, so who knows it could have been another one, gosh I need to check on that too. Never thought about that.

I also have another friend who had a very healthy baby, healthy toddler boy, who had bad reactions to vacs. He lost a lot of weight, didn't look healthy, and had severe cronic diarhea that they have tracked to vacs. I know he's had a lot of health problems from it since. I do know her siblings do not have ANY Of their children vac's AT ALL due to this. (I'm not sure which vac caused tje [problems or even how he is now several years later, but I'm going to find out more, she was a past friend and I haven't seen her in the last several yrs).

I will be following this thread and I just want to THANK YOU as a Dr. for being open and for caring/checking/researching this. It seems so hard to find honest info that isn't biased one side or the other, and is actually factual and not just opinions (although I know that we all have opinions). Our Ped. is very CLOSED and unwilling to even listen to our concerns about vacs. She just says.... well they need them. :

Do you have the option of finding another pediatrician? Maybe a good family practice Doc or an ND?

To answer the original question - thankfully I have no vaccine injured children, BUT one of my younger brothers was definately injured by vaccines. (I'm 10 years older than him).

He had bad reactions to most of his vax's but his 18 month shots took the cake (this was in the early '90's). He had really bad reactions to these and regressed developmentally immediately.

He struggled through childhood with numerous learning disabilities and illnesses. He was such a sick kid - always sick with something. I remember my mom just rocking him constantly in the rocking chair. She was pretty much completely unavailable throughout the years that I was 11-16 because of the sheer amount of time my little brother needed.

Today he's doing better with the help of lots of counseling, a little medication (antidepressant), a great private school, great mentors/family and more time to mature (he's 18 now). He's now been back ina public school system and is generally doing well - with ups and downs.

He is on the autism spectrum (Asperger's Syndrome) and has *wicked* allergies. He has been able to "teach" himself how to interact socially, so he doesn't have the same social stigma going on that he used to, thankfully.

Thankfully my daughter although she is *almost* fully vaxed (we skipped the MMR chx pox combo) has had no ill effects except for the day it happens she's grumpier than normal... but so am I when I get vaxed, so it seems reasonable. I'm still torn on whether or not to vax my son due in July. I'll be following this post.

My dd developed and was hospitalized for a good while with a severe bowel obstruction - the vaccine was later recalled. She is 8. My precious ds had siezures after each of the Hep B-- told it was not harmful- just looked scary to us- I was 18 and believed him. After #3 he stopped talking. Eventually he started again, But he is the first person in either of our families to have a learning disability. He is 7. I was vaccinated at work a few years ago for hep B - I've had all 3 shots 4xs in my life and never any big problems until the last time when I siezured off and on for hours. (Thank God I worked in a hospital!) I found this website when I was 9 months pregnant--dd2 has never had a vaccination or abx. She is really healthy, happy, and vibrant. She is 13 months.

My DS, now 4, was fully vaxed until his 12 months vax. Before we went in he had 6-8 words, including mama and dada. Within 4 hours of getting his MMR and chickenpox he had a fever of 103.5. Our FP doc was very concerned and stayed in contact with us throughout the day and into the night. He screamed and cried inconsolably for hours. After that fever he *lost* all of his words including mama . He didn't regain any of his speech until after his second birthday. He is still speech delayed : . My MD said no more vaxes for DS or any other future children for us.

Fortunately for us, our son wasn't injured permanently. But, we did almost lose him to his vaccinations.

I'll post our story about vaccinations. I've posted it before, but it sums up our experience pretty well. I hope it helps you to understand as we were in your shoes once, as well!

We used to be like you. Not vaccinate? What kind of whacko doesn't care enough for their child (not even talking about society) to protect them from such horrible diseases??

Crunchy Granola Radicals, all of 'em. Probably only eat veggies and don't shave their legs... Certainly not "normal" people, like us.

I signed that consent form in the hospital when ds was a day old to ok his getting the HepB vax (because it is the law, stated the nurse). I never thought to even ask WHAT HepB was exactly. If "they" said he needed it, it must be okay, so........

We took our son in for his 2, 4 and 7 month exams (late on the 6 month because of weather concerns driving the 180 mile roundtrip to the office) like good parents are supposed to do. He was doing wonderfully, gaining weight and length ahead of schedule and breastfed like a champ from birth onward, no problems at all. He got his shots and I held back tears as he cried, accepting without questioning, this part of well-child checks.

I was never given a vaccine information sheet (VIS) and never asked to sign a consent form at any of those visits. I was never told about any possible problems related to vaccinating. I never noted if the nurse noted the lot numbers on the records (why would I even think about such a thing, I didn't know they were supposed to do this, required by law). The shots were just given and I was told what they were for. I never asked why our son needed a shot for this or that, I never asked about what was in the vaccines or what about the diseases was so bad. I simply accepted, completely blindly, the absolute knowledge the doctor has. They couldn't give out anything that wasn't completely safe, right?

And, so our son received 6 different vaccines at his well-child visit at the age of 7 months. OPV (oral polio vaccine, yup, it was still being used in 1999), HepB, DPT and Hib.

He had just passed, with flying colours (I was so proud), his physical exam, not 5 minutes before. He was ahead of schedule on everything and the doctor was glowing. Though he was telling me we could start solids, I ignored this piece of advice with a smile, knowing we were going to hold off solids for awhile longer, based on personal feelings (why did I listen to those feelings and not question others?).

And so, the doctor left and the nurse came in, bearing her steel tray with various hypodermics on it. She gave him his oral dose of polio vaccine and then BAM-BAM-BAM, two shots in one thigh and one in the other, all of them, literally, within 1 minute.

His reaction was swift and frightening. Within 30 SECONDS of receiving these vaccines, he went into complete anaphalactic shock. Lost consciousnes, no blood pressure, blue-gray skin, stopped breathing.

They resusitated him with who-knows-what in more shots (the meds were never listed on the medical record, but then, neither was the reaction). A routine 20 minute well-baby check turned into several hours of fear (we stayed in the office for several hours, "Just to make sure" said the doctor...). Our doctor simply said, "Don't worry, sometimes, these things happen. You have a fainter! He'll be fine."

I'd never heard of babies fainting from shots, but I knew that adults sometimes did, so maybe it happened with infants? But, what happened was certainly NOT fainting. However, good little person that I was, I didn't question the great and mighty doctor about his diagnosis.

We were finally allowed to leave, with the dark advice to stay in town for awhile longer (3 hours suggested) and head to the ER if he had any additional symptoms or problems... As though I needed to be instructed to do that.

Fortunately, for us, he recovered, though he slept all the way home (2 hour drive) and was fitful that night. In the long run, no lasting problems. He hasn't been vaxxed since.

Shortly after that, we mentioned what had happened to a friend. She said that it sounded like a vaccine reaction (we had never heard of such a thing). She pointed us in the direction of research, and we began our journey into the world of medical journals (JAMA or Lancet), the WHO, CDC and NIH websites. We read pharmaceutical journals and reference books (PDR). We spoke with other doctors (not much help, actually as they depend on the pharma reps for most of their info, and Docs only get about three hours of education on vaccines in med school), pharma reps (those guys are a joke, they are salesmen, nothing more) and even veterinarians (don't laugh, they ordered mercury removed from animal vaccines years ago and gave great advice and have a world of knowledge!). We read books, magazines and scanned the Internet sites, pro-, anti-, and on-the-fence.

In the end, it was obvious as to what our choice was. The most natural one.

No more vaccinations, for any of us.

For us, it was an easy decision. No more poisons in our child. See, it isn't just mercury. It's the host of other KNOWN toxins and carcinogenic ingredients (aluminum, formaldehyde, anti-freeze, fetal stems cells, ANIMAL cells and more).

Diseases aren't the scary things they used to be. Better health (and, health care) and cleaner environments have much to do with this. Even the diseases that are routinely used to try to fear us into vaxxing are not as bad as they are made out because of the changes in environment and treatment. My parents are both 86+. They remember polio epidemics that hit both coasts (Dad in the East, Mom out West) when they were kids and adults. Many of their friends contracted polio. But, you know what? None of their aquaintances suffered long-term effects. Many had polio and never even knew it. We have one friend that did contract it in Africa, in 1956. She spent some time in an iron lung (in Morocco, where the medical care was not the best). But, she survived and is fine today (a vital 84 year old).

I am 48. Even with vaccinations, I had measles as a child. I had rubella, whooping cough, scarlet fever (NO vaccine for that one!), chicken pox and mumps, as well. So did all my siblings (there are 4 of us). We came through all of them fine. My dh had these same ones, save for the scarlet fever. Our parents had them, too.

Yes, ALL of us ARE continually bombarded with environmental hazards, as many like to remind us, pollution in so many forms, radiation, bacteria & viruses, the current administration...

Some of these hazards we can't control: we drive cars and buy groceries and live in a house and wear purchased clothes that are not necessarily 100% organic cotton (and we didn't vote for the guy in the White House)!

Some hazards we can: we live away from the cities in a rural area on a large parcel of land. We have a well that is 750' deep. We have it tested yearly and know what is and isn't in it. We live in an area of the country (in a rural setting) that is so free of air pollution as to say it is pure. We homeschool so as to give our son the best we can, educationally, environmentally and socially. We grow all our own fruit and veggies, organically. We eat free-range meat from a local rancher. We don't eat any fish (fresh or marine). We plant trees all over our property. We recycle and support environmentally-friendly organizations.

On some, we compromise: we have a computer and TV (though no reception) for use with the DVD and VCR. I wear a watch with a glow-in-the-dark face.

We are not in a bubble, however, nor is our son. Being homeschooled, he goes everywhere with me. He is exposed to disease in the environment everyday (as are all of us), including two attempts to "make" him catch chicken pox by exposing him to children that had it. No good, he remains "pox-less! He is now 6 1/2, and has had nothing more than a couple of sniffles in his life. His immune system is strong enough without the dubious "benefit" of vaccines.

Should he receive another of the vaccines he got at 7 months, we would probably lose him permanently. See, subsequent reactions are always worse. There is no way to test him as to which caused it. It was probably the pertussis component of the DTP, as that is the worst in the bunch.

We stopped well-child checks, as well, after his reaction. There didn't seem to be much point since he was not getting any vaccinations. Afterall, I was perfectly capable of measuring him and checking various sources to see how he was progressing. Happy to say, he's survived just fine without those journeys to see the all-powerful physicians!

We have been refused as potential patients be multiple physicians' offices because of our no-vax decision (even in light of it being MEDICAL in nature!). Other offices have said, we'd have to vaccinate, they'd just be ready for a reaction. Yeah, right........

We now have a WONDERFUL physician. His practice is both allopathic and homeopathic. He respects and uses both mainstream and alternative medicine. He is not pill-happy. He does not even offer vaccines in his office. If you want them, he'll write and RX (after explaining a bit about them!) and you can go to the mainstream clinic in town or the health department and get them there.

I am not completely anti-mainstream medical, either. I appreciate them and KNOW they do a lot of good (they kept my late mother-in-law comfortable as she lay dying from lung cancer several years ago). But, like anything, I don't take them at face value.

We have had friends refuse to allow their vaccinated children play with our unvaccinated son. What are they afraid of? If vaccines work as well as they seem to believe, what's the problem???

You must remember, NO VACCINE IS 100% GUARANTEED EFFECTIVE OR SAFE. So, just because you were immunized, you could/can still contract a disease. It may allow you a milder case (not necessarily), but it is still the disease.

So, if you've read this far, I thank you! I wanted you to see that those of us that make this decision do so after MUCH research, and into areas of knowledge that go beyond one website.

We look behind the people that write the information and find out where THEY are coming from regarding this subject. Many of them have financial ties in the vaccine game, and, unless you look deeply, you will take anything they say at face value (paid for, thank you very much, by the pharma companies!). Push vaccines, get a paycheck. Dr. Paul Offit comes to mind (we call him Dr. Profit).

I prefer MY information from a wider source, and ones less-biased.

So, ask questions, that's good! But, also, widen your research. And respect those of us that differ in what we say and do, we'll do the same in return.. We'll listen politely to you if you'll listen politely to us!

By the way, I guess I turned into one of those Crunch Granola Radicals! I breastfed until our son was 4 1/2 years old, we still co-sleep (he's 8 1/2) and we DO eat a lot of veggies.

However, I still shave my legs....

I'm just now starting to put some pieces together. Our oldest son has ADHD -- I have to say that I truly believe he would have had it irregardless, but I wonder about the DEGREE to which he now has it. I had the flu vax while pregnant with him! He was fully vax'd even w/ varicella. We have since decided to work w/ a Naturopathic Doc and have him on several supplements/amino acids in addition to diet mods and those are working quite well.

Our middle son was fully vax'd as well and starting at a little over a year old he was making ALL the sounds for animals -- he could do all the barnyard animals, snakes, monkeys, lions, etc. He LOVED playing that game. Soon after the first round of his MMR shots he lost the ability to tell me what sounds animals made. It was the ODDEST thing. I remember being so confused at the time, but did not connect it to his shots. After all the shots he was fussy and contracted low grade fevers (that I treated w/ Tylenol!) but again, did not think much about it since the handouts state that is "normal." He is now almost 3 and finally able to tell me all the sounds animals make again. He has definitely been speech delayed but not to the point of huge red flags. He will not be vax'd again.

Our third child is 8 mos. and will not be receiving anymore vax's (he has his Hib shots b/c I let our doc talk me into it). I, too, have turned into a crunchy granola I never thought I'd be

My friends baby was killed by the Hep B vax in March 2006. She was born healthy and died less than 48 hours after receiving it. They classified it as SIDS.

My 6 yr old daughter has mercury toxicity which has caused her a lot of behavioral and emotional problems. We are on the road to treatment but it is so expensive to do it all out of pocket. The insurance will cover any vax pushing doctor I want but they won't cover any other type so it is going to be an expensive process for us. I have not vaccinated my 1yr old at all except for the Hep B they slipped past me at birth!

Hello, I am also new to this forum!

My 10 month old daughter was injured by the DTaP. She was fine , developing awesome! Rolling, cooing, tracking w/ her eyes. She had her 4 month shots on 11-6-06, that evening she had her 1st seizure. She has now been diagnosed with Infantile Spasms, Progressive myclonic epilepsy. She also has cortical visiual blindness. She cannot roll, sit, track with eyes, developmentally she is a 2month old now. She has been in the hospital 4 times i this past month alone due to non seizure control. She has hypotonia (low muscle control) no neck control , she is having a G-tube put in May 9th.We currently have a lawsut aganist the Vaccination compensation injury fund through the government. My pedi didnt even report the adverse reaction. We dont know what her future holds.. but she is such a blessing to us every day! I will put a link to her web site.. http://www.kalielizabeth.com

My favorite Aunt suffered anaphylatic shock in a doctor's office in the 1920s after a routine vax. That was the last one in our family.

I am not dealing with autism, but it is a neurological condition (ADHD that sometimes wanders into ODD).

My twins (8) were exposed to flu shot in-utero (9 weeks) and all the regular shots after being born (despite their being 3'11" and 5'1" at birth). To make matters worse, due to a misdiagnosis they were taken into CPS custody at 7 weeks and REVACCINATED for everything they'd already had. They are responding fairly well to dietary and lifestyle modification but are definitely not NORMAL. Our 4 year old has been unvaccinated from birth and is normal.

Personally, I had anaphylactic reactions to DTP/TD both as an infant and as a teen (when it was second attempted in response to injury). I have a problem with chronic miscarriage that has never been figured out (despite plenty of testing) and my gut feeling is that it has to do with the vaccine and reaction. DTaP/TD is one known worldwide to be connected with miscarriage.

My mother's brother and his wife lost their first child due to a severe anaphylactic reaction to DTP when she was an infant.

I have posted this before but I will just re-cap. I was very on-the-fence about vax's because I have friends who did not and I had already done some reading. I thought if I just made the leap with the first round then maybe I could get over my fear of the shots I wouln't have to woryy about it either way anymore (!?!?). So my DD had her first DTaP at 3m, delayed from 2m because i was thinking about it. I couldn't sleep the whole night before. When we went to the appointment our doctor discovered my DD had a heart murmur. I was so consumed with what that was and meant (normal & common) that I said yes to the DTaP thinking I had bigger things to worry about with the whole murmur thing. My DD cried on and off really, really hard for almost a week. She had never cried like that before or since. She just kept bursting into raging fits until she was exhausted and would fall asleep - this happened for days. She stopped smiling, she stopped looking at us (making eye contact) and she had these scary weird head tremors about 5 times that I saw. When my sister saw her head shake she was horrified because it was so bizarre. Basically my DD retreated into a vacant shell. Thankfully, after about 6-8 weeks the eye connection started to come back. The smiling took even longer. Also after that vax my DD's legs exploded in excema (nothing before the shots). It was like a cheese grater was used on them and she was a wreck from the non-stop frantic itching. We struggled and worked with all sorts of excema treatments from the inside (diet / gut flora) out. Again, thankfully her legs now at 18m have cleared up and she appears to be excema free.

Of course we stopped vaxing and I started seriously researching. Our doctor is fine with us not vaxing and believes it's a parent's choice (I live in Canada and it is not mandatory here). DD was tested for allergies a few months back when the excema was still happening. She has an egg allergy which hopefully she will outgrow. The allergist gave me a lecture saying I should still give DD the MMR and everything 'should' be fine. Our doctor says NO WAY because of the egg factor. We wouldn't have anyway. No more vaxes for us.

My daughter reacted badly to vaccines at age 4. I feel lucky that it wasn't worse. She began having immediate lethargy and refused to eat, and she started having panic attacks, nightmares, and night terrors. Two weeks later, with a profoundly anxious, profoundly altered child, we started doing some care for heavy metal toxicity. After the first treatment, she ate for 45 straight minutes, every single thing I put in front of her, and slept that night for the first time since her vaccines. Neither of my children has been vaccinated since. I was doing very much a delayed schedule and thought I was keeping her safe. I can't believe I let someone hurt her.

3 of my older 5 all had reactions to the DTP.Previous ped put them on the DT and we didn't have any more problems. With ds No 6 new ped who told me the dtap had been cleaned up a lot.Ds had seizure collapse within an hour of vaxing. He now has what they are terming an atypical seizure disorder.

DD no 7 hasn't had any vaxes. We've discontinued vaxing anyone else. While I feel pretty sure our family's troubles were related to the DPT,it's interesting to note that many package inserts have seizures listed as a possible side effect.

I used to trust the info docs had to share I've since become much more cynical and view them more as front men for big pharma.

Welcome to MDC! I also hope you'll visit "The case against circumcision" board as many (if not most) doctors are awfully misinformed about foreskin, its importance and intact boys care.
