How would you say this?

Aibhlinn.

How would you pronounce this name? I'm just curious. It's a name we're considering, and I won't say why right now since explaining it would give away the obvious pronunciation. I'm interested in how badly it might get translated.

I'm guessing it's a form of Aisling/Ashlyn?

ETA. I googled and I'm wrong. But now I know how to pronounce it it makes sense as it's like another name starting with S.
Right language. Wrong pronunciation. But I appreciate that thought. I hadn't considered that people might see it as a different name altogether.

Yeah, the bh together is hard for people who aren't familiar with it.
I'm going to guess Ashlyn? Are you just spelling Aisling differently? I see you chose different spellings of Aeden and Conner so that's how I'm basing my guess.

I recognize the bh combo from the name Siobhan, which I can pronounce, but I think I'd tend to forget.

That's not as far off as you might think, and all things considered not to bad.

lastrid has it right.

frontierpsych, that's my main concern. Even people who know how to say it might not immediately recognize it. And I live in the southern us (currently) where a name like Siobhan is unheard of.

Yeah, my guess was Abe-lynn too. I love the right way though.
Nothing wrong with an uncommon name! I liked being the only Shanti in my classes.
My DS's name is Colum and we chose that spelling as opposed to Colm so that he wouldn't have to deal with constant mispronunciation. I am considering Siobhan or Aobe for the next one...
I really wanted to name dd3 Aoife, but no one would ever say it right so dh nixed it.

abe-lynn

by the way... unusual names are all the rage right now... for a girl my husband wanted the name Yunalesca... which we both love... but it got nixed when my mother said it sounded like "unicorn"...

I say full steam ahead with the Gaelic names! Both of our kiddos have Gaelic names with traditional spellings. Most people only have to be told the correct pronunciation once and they remember it - it's the spelling that is the hard part. But most people don't need to write their names often so it hasn't been that big of a deal. It was more important for us to honor the culture of our ancestors.

hmmm....
so it reminds me of siobhan- which i know the bh is a v sound
so i'm going to say.. ave-lyn? maybe avalyn?
or maybe the ai isnt aye, but eye.

eye-vlyn?

Aibhlinn = Eye-ba-lynne?

It looks super confusing. Super, super confusing.
Katie, I like Aoife, but I agree that pronouncing it is tricky.

Amanda, that's about right. It's the Gaelic version of Evelyn, so it's pronounced Ave-lynn. The bh makes that v sound like in Siobhan. It's one of the odd combinations in Gaelic.

My family is all Irish - my grandmother's name is Evelyn. I like the Gaelic version better though. I dunno what we'll do. People here have trouble with Aeden. I have to say it very slowly for them. And I know we're moving in a few years so I'm more inclined to use a name that's got heritage in it. We'll see.
I knew how to pronounce it, but I may have an unfair advantage.

very good point - in most cases, you get to know someone before you see their name written down... when people have the written name only would it likely be a problem. it is a GORGEOUS name. go for it
!

cherrybomb, how do you pronounce aoife?
