How young was your babe when they took their first step?

I'm just curious because so many people are telling me that Katelynn is some sort of freak of nature. She took her first unassisted step 4 days after she turned 8 months. She started full on walking at 8 months 3 weeks. And by 9 1/2 months she was walking/running like a pro. Is it really that unusual to be walking that early? Is my daughter really a freak?

That is rather early, but not unheard of. I know of a little one that walked at 7 months! I was walking by 9 months when I was a baby.
13 1/2 months and 13 months. But a girl in my older son's Gymboree class was walking at 8 months. And my midwife's kids have all walked between 8-10 months. For there to be an average of 12 months, there has to to be plenty of kids who walk much earlier and much later. I don't think it's that odd.

My dd took her first step or two at 11.5 months, and is approaching the whole walking thing very cautiously. She stands up without holding onto anything really well. I am kinda hoping that she will be walking a little more by next week when we go to visit my mom for her birthday.

I was walking at 10.5 months..we don't know about my DH because his parents are long since passed away

M: 1 day shy of 18 months
E: 14 months
C: not yet, I'm glad

My niece walked at 10 months. I like the late walkers. They don't get into as much stuff.
1st - 9 months
2nd - 10 months
3rd - 14 months
4th - 10 months

I prefer early walking - my third child was really frustrated at her inability to get around, she was so much happier once she could walk!
DS was 15.5 months when he started walking unassisted. But that's just the way he is - he won't attempt to do anything until he is sure he has it mastered.

My friends dd walked at 7 months. My other friends dd walked at 10 months. My own dd really really wants to walk (she's 8 months) but doesn't have the balance yet (but boy does she get frustrated watching her brother LOL).
My dd took her first steps walking around things at around 8.5 months but didnt start to walk until 10months then fell and broke her arm and stopped walking till 12months. My ds was 10months before he even attempted to walk holding onto stuff and didnt walk by hisself until 14mo. Interesting thing I found tho was that my dd never really crawled she would crawl just far enought to get to something to pull up on. My ds on the other hand was crawling at 10months. He got into plenty tho just crawling

My dd was about 8.5 months and was walking full time by 9.5 months. She was always ahead in the physical stuff (sat unassisted at 3 months, crawled at 5 months, pulled up a week after crawling.) I love it because she could easily get what she wanted which meant she wasn't frustrated!
I was walking at 8 months, my dd walked at 9, ds walked at 11.
1st - 11.5 months
2nd - 10 months to the day
3rd is just starting to lift his head and push up with his arms. Will roll if I put him on a pillow. Whee!
DS took his first steps around 9 months and was walking everywhere by 10 months.

DD took her first unassisted steps around 8 months and was walking by 8.5 months.

I'm almost afraid to have another child because they keep walking younger and younger. My sanity can't take it!
My sons were 10 mos ish my daughter was 7 mos one week! SHe looked so funny because she is very petite, like a tiny baby walking. And she just took off, following her older brother.
WOW! That IS early.

My daughter's first step was at nine months and two weeks, and everyone tells me how early that is.

I think your life is over once they crawl, so walking early is no real hassle.
I did a little reading on the topic a while ago and most of the books suggest it's a genetic thing...early or late walking runs in families. Baby's personality has a lot to do with it as well.

Early walking runs in my mom's family (they have pictures of one of my uncles walking at 5mo!) AND my dad's family...so it wasn't a surprise when I walked at 8mo and my brother at 7mo. My own dd was a bit later, around 10mo.
It IS early, but not unheard of. My youngest started walking at 8 months. My other children started walking at 10-11 months old.

Just a general trend I've noticed, my kids tend to be rather advanced when it comes to reaching gross motor developmental milestones, but seem to be a little behind the curve when it comes to speech development. But it all evens out once they get older

My son Dylan started walking at 6 months old, by eight months old his was running, and at 9 months old I literally caught him swinging from a light fixture. He hasn't stopped since.

My other children two children walked at 14 months and nearly 19 months.
