HUGE OB Vent!!!

Alot of you know that I had horrible neck pain and unbearable headache. Well, yesterday, I called my OB/GYN and they prescribed fioricet, which they told me was non-narcotic. I never looked it up, because I trusted my OB and his judgment. I felt a little funny and loopy from taking it so out of curiosity, I looked it up this morning. IT'S A FRICKIN BARBITUATE!!! I was so mad that I was crying. I TRUSTED my OB! Needless to say, I am switching OB's. And I have an appt with him on Friday, which I am taking the time to give him a piece of my mind about all of this. It's all over my chart that I'm a recovering addict and he knows I'm against anything narcotic. Vent over. Thanks.

Yikes!!! I'm so sorry that happened to you!! It definitely took me a few years of mistakes, misinformation, and misdiagnoses for me to finally get it through my head that doctors often do not know what they are talking about! I question everything now and look medications up on my own. Just the other day I was asking my mw if there were any anti-nausea meds I could take that were safe while breastfeeding. She started listing off all the usual meds and I had to be the one to tell HER that they were considered L3 or totally contraindicated with breastfeeding. You would think she would know about that. I've also had countless "arguments" with doctors and pediatricians about allergies, steroids and other things. Anyway, sorry you had to go through that... definitely time for a new care provider!

It's just sad, cuz I thought he was different. He was the one who did my daughter's failed induction and his bed-side manner was very good, gentle, etc. But since I can't trust his judgment, it's time for a new dr. My resentment is strong enough now that I debate not going to the doctor after my 20wk ultrasound unless its emergency. Both of my term pregnancies were healthy and normal and so were my deliveries. His behavior just confirms why I do not want a hospital birth. THIS is why it's called medical practice. We're test dummies.

Oh no, I'm so sorry! Yeah, that seems like a grievous error for him to make. I don't blame you for being angry.

ha! It hasn't come back, but I've been on a steady dose of Tylenol and hot bath/hot rice sock since my dose this morning. I went to an NA meeting tonight to try to aleviate some of my resentment issues cuz I was not in a Zen place today. I was very mad and I'm still set on switching OB's.

ya i had the same thing happen to me. except different problems. i am also a recovering addict. i have been clean since dec.25th, 2008. so this december will be 3 years. unfortuneitly i had a problem with my head. i have a nurologist who can't make up her mind. so instead of the drugs she gave me i talked to my ob who put me on tylonal 3 witch has codine. i didn't want to take it. so what i did, was had my spouse lock it up and only when i needed it i took only half instead of the 1 or 2 that i was supposed to take. now i am happy to say i don't take it, i still have it and its in my medicine box with my thyorid meds and i never want to take it i don't get the urge to just take it. but then again i was addicted to morphine & hydrocodone. but i am always scared to take any kind of pain reliever besides motron. i am here for you.

Thank you! It's good to find someone that knows what I'm talking about as far as addiction and an almost zero tolerance for narcotic pain-relievers. That's why I had to hit a meeting. Some doctors just don't care, or they aren't thorough. I felt like such a bratty baby today at my appt when I told him I'd be switching dr's and why. He genuinely felt bad and said it was a mistake. At least I'll still be within the same practice, so there's a chance he'll be doing my care from time to time....

well it was a good thing you told him why. but next time they need to be a little more careful. i guess it happens sometimes. but still for us its not right. it's not easy when they put it in our face. i hate when doctors don't take the time for something as simple as that. i understand where your coming from.

I mean.....I can see a DOCTOR'S side, which is FULL of patients, but the mother's side is that he's not only caring for me, he's caring for my child as well. I can see if he didnt take his time with me, but the couple visits I had with him, he didn't rush in/out at our appointments together. *sigh* Such is the life of a worrying mother/mother-to-be and add hormones to the mix. lol

ya. i understand. this is my second pregnancy. oh i hated the ob for sticking her finger up my butt without saying anything then after saying i had to do an anal exam. i was in tears. and i tell you she was always so sweet and caring with my first pregnancy. although i didn't see he until i was 5 months because i didn't think i was pregnant. i had no signs or symptoms. and it's normal for me to miss my period for 3 months at a time. but this time i knew since 4 weeks pregnant.

Ya know, I actually saw that on the movie Knocked Up. One of the OB's she saw slipped it in the wrong hole. LOL

Sorry your doc didn't warn you about the anal probe, but they do that to better palpitate the organs- especially the uterus. I have had countless pelvic exams done by different practitioners (we move a lot) and if I recall correctly, only one time did I NOT receive a rectal exam. Here is a tidbit from Medscape if you're curious:

A retroverted or retroflexed uterus: assessment of the uterus and ovaries is greatly enhanced if 1 finger is also inserted into the rectum;

An atrophic vagina: if the bimanual exam is difficult to perform, a rectal exam will permit a limited assessment of the pelvis;

Pain during the pelvic exam: to isolate the source of the pain and evaluate for masses; and

Vaginal infection: to assess the cul-de-sac for fullness.

The preceding lists are not all-inclusive. Each situation should be assessed, and a determination in regard to the value of a rectal exam should be made by the examiner.

Okay, so you're saying the other FOUR OB's that I've seen have been doing their job wrong? I have never, ever been touched there in the 6 years I've been getting care from an OB. I'm not complaining though. lol

Well it's a case by case basis and I bet each practitioner has a way they prefer to do things. I guess I seem to keep picking ones that feel more confident that they are getting a good picture of what's going on doing a bi-manual exam. But seriously, it's common and not at all strange. What is strange is not warning the patient ahead of time- that's not cool.
