Since the early 1960s, the man who owns and lives inside the £1m Victorian property has been digging. No one knows how far the the network of burrows underneath 75-year-old William Lyttle's house stretch. But according to the council, which used ultrasound scanners to ascertain the extent of the problem, almost half a century of nibbling dirt with a shovel and homemade pulley has hollowed out a web of tunnels and caverns, some 8m (26ft) deep, spreading up to 20m in every direction from his house.

Wow.

He's in his 70's, so he would have been a small child during WWII. Didn't Londoners sleep down in the subway (as we call them in the USA) tunnels during the war? And he seems to be repeating that behavior.

Maybe this is some kind of odd survival behavior, knowing he could escape into the tunnels for safety, replaying the trauma of his childhood.

World war II really affected the children involved. I visited my grammy in London a few months back and we went to the Royal Air force museum. We had to leave because the sound simulations of the rockets and bombs going off almost gave her a panic attack.

She described it as taking her right back to being a scared little girl.

I can understand why he might have this compulsion to dig

Really does remind me of some elderly horders I have dealt with and deal with because of the great depression. My great aunt had issues with this all her life....I don't doubt it was related to PTS....now she is just almost a 100 and completely crazy.
