Is there a nicer way to say it?
My dd (14 months) often does this humping motion on the floor, esp. when tired. She'll do it until her head drops in sleep. She's done it in the past (starting around 9 months) and goes through phases when she does it a lot and when she doesn't. It doesn't particular bother me but I wanted to know if other kids do it, how you handle it with others (like grandparents who are like ???) and if there's any explanation for it (my husband wonders if it has to do with itching or anything?). Thanks. Happy Earth Day

My daughter is a humptress [heh]

I am okay with it, because I think it's just natural. She calls her privates her "poo-laa" and the other day was humping, and I heard her say "oh! my poo-laa!" If anything, it kind of cracked me up

I wouldn't let it bother you.

DS does that too. He just thinks he's funny when he does it. If others are around sometimes I try to distract him and get him to do something else, but in general I don't worry about it.

It feels good, why wouldn't she do it? Most kids do, and most kids keep doing it. The important thing to remember is that when she gets old enough to understand about privacy, then explain it's a private thing without making it shameful.

LOL! Thats too cute!

My ds has done this, too, on occasion. I think it feels good to him because its an ordered, rhythmic movement - not unlike being rocked or patted on the back.

My DD also started this very young...9 months or so. She is almost 7 now and I hardly ever see her doing it anymore. It either finally sunk in that it's to be done in private or she isn't doing it as much these days. I didn't really let it bother me, but there were times when it embarrassed me....like in the grocery store that one time and when the IL's were over.

I had to laugh when I saw the title of this thread. Ds is 2 yo now. He doesn't do it anymore but he sure did it a LOT as a baby! He has his "Bear Bear" - a little blanket he's always sleeps with. Well he humps that thing and anything he likes. I just remembered - he's taken my hand and tucked (there) to um hump. I'd always move it away without making it a big deal.

Its funny to me know. I really don't think its a big deal and I think it will pass. It did for us. I think things sometimes become a bigger deal if we address them. I'd just keep an eye on it... I mean if she gets old and does it in public... then you could talk to her about what is OK for home, privately, and in public.

Oh and it doesn't sound like its an ITCHY issue as she's not scratching.... she's comforting herself.

Just my two cents!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate you sharing your experiences. Like I said, it doesn't worry me I just wanted to know what others have gone through dealing with this funny little habit.
