When are they going to stop trying to protect us from healthful food? I bet if there was an outbreak of salmonilla in pasteurized milk, nothing would be done. If they're really so worried about our health, why don't they outlaw junk food?

I just emailed Tierra Farms (there are co-ops on the co-op board) and they will continue to sell *truely raw* almonds until at least next year. They purchased all of their almonds ahead of time to get around the legislation... for now anyways. So if anyone is looking for them...

http://www.tierrafarms.com/

No, that's what many people are upset about, that the government is (once again) lying about our food.

Store almonds in the freezer if you're storing them for any length of time at all. (Anything more than a couple of weeks, less in really hot weather.)

This makes me Raw Almonds are the only nut we buy!!! DD is allergic to the rest of them and so raw almonds are a staple in our house for DH and myself (dd does not eat them). I have no idea how to get a large quantity of them and how well they will freeze. I'm so incredibly sick of food recalls, pasteurization and the rest of it. Anyone know if almond trees will grow in Western WA????

Hey Kim, did you *read* the link?

Because of 2, yes TWO outbreaks of Salmonella, one in 2001, the other in 2004. That's it.

Almonds freeze very well! All nuts, really. We eat them right out of the freezer, no thawing required, and they still taste great!

A friend of mine called Azure Standard about buying raw almonds from them, as our order date is before September 1, but our delivery date is after, and she wasn't sure how that would work out. According to the folks at Azure, the effective date of this "law" has been pushed back to March 2008. So they say they will still be purchasing and shipping raw almonds at least through then. Anyone know anything about that?

Yes, it has been delayed 6 months until March 1 to allow the US Dept of Agriculture time to approve the change.

So there is still time to fight this ludricous law. Can we have a petition on MDC? or something?

Will there be a loophole in the law? Will they sell raw almonds as "pet food" or something like that?

I just looked around, I haven't seen anything about it actually being delayed.

I see that the almond board petitioned to have it delayed, but that the USDA denied that request.

Can you still buy almonds unshelled? I understood that the pastuerisation was done by steam-blasting the surface of the nuts so that any pathogens were killed. And I assumed they were talking about shelled almonds. Maybe unshelled ones are okay and can still be bought as is.
