Specifically, I need a good vitamin D supplement for myself, but I'd like to find a good cod liver oil that I (and possibly my 19 mo dd) can take that's safe for milk, egg, and peanut allergies. I'm not sure what stores around here carry or how good different brands are. I've seen Blue Ice recommended here but can't find anywhere that lists "ingredients" to be safe. At one point, someone recommended Nordic Naturals as a brand for something else, but their "Arctic-D Cod Liver Oil" says "No gluten, yeast, milk derivatives, or artificial colors or flavors. May contain traces of peanut and/or soy derivatives" so that's out.

If I look for a brand in stores, what do I look for as far as what's "good" in a CLO supplement? Do I want fermented or not? I'd like to go with a "tried and true" allergy-safe one but I feel like I just don't know what I'm looking for!

ETA: I don't know what the numbers were (they're mailing me the results) but I asked to test my vitamin D level with other bloodwork and was told it's low and I should take a supplement of 1500 mg per day.

If you want the HVCLO, I think that Green Pastures or Dr. Ron's are the only ones (that I know of.) I think that Dr. Ron's adds rosemary as an antioxidant, but nothing else. He's pretty good about answering emails though if you want to ask him. The Green Pastures stuff has a plant derivative added, but they won't tell me what kind other than that it's soy free. But I guess it doesn't matter if you're only avoiding milk, eggs, and peanuts. Their RAW fermented doesn't have any other ingredients.

If you just want regular CLO- I use the TwinLab regular liquid- it has no other ingredients, and the A & D aren't synthetic (like they are in many other brands.)

I think that whatever brand you decide on (for the CLO and any other food product you buy), it's best to call or write the company and just verify the ingredients, derivatives, and processes they use. And then check the labels each time you buy, just in case they've changed something.

I forgot to add- if you're really low in D, you should probably take a D3 supplement on top of the CLO. If you try to get a high amount of vitamin D just from CLO, you will get way too much vitamin A (not so much with the fermented HVCLO, because the ratios are different, but definitely with the regular grocery-store brands.)
