I borrowed a sposie! (more on diapers and temp)

I am the wack-o who was taking temps of my ds in various diapers earlier in the week...
I determined that various combinations of fitteds and wool were no cooler in temperature than my pocket diapers. In fact, the pockets were most often a degree or so cooler.

Anyway, I didn't have any disposable diapers to compare. However, I was able to borrow one from a friend.

My result? (based on just one temp reading since I only had one disposable!)....the disposable was the same temperature of other diapers that I temped that day.

Just thought some of you might be curious about the results my little "study".

Did anyone else ever end up doing their own little experiment? If so, what were your results?

I was thinking about doing that same experiment except with a laser thermometer.
: Thank you for your experiment.....you are too cute!

Thanks for taking the time to update us...I was interested in your results with a sposie.

try it on a hot day... how do dipes breath when it is hot... there was a big study in Germany I think? that sposies cause higher temps esp bad for little boys

I
it! You are good for my analytical soul!

And brave. I am going for a record with my youngest, no disposables EVER! I don't think I could put one on him even in the interest of science!

Oh, I am not saying that disposables are "okay". That wasn't my point at all. I know about the study that was mentioned and that is what drove me to experiment with various diapers.

What I've found just doesn't make me as concerned about the temp side of things. If you caught my original post (from last week), I was concerned about using PUL diapers, but actually found my pocket PUL diapers to be a tad bit (just a tad!) cooler than my fitted/wool soaker diapers. I was very surprised by that, honestly. But it made me feel better about using pocket diapers, which my toddler actually prefers (and asks for!). I still looooove my wool, don't get me wrong. And the reason for testing with a sposie was because it was requested here by many. :LOL

Disposables are still full of yucky chemicals. No changing that!

Disposables are yucky, but sometimes so convenient when you travel! So thanks for your new experiment. I just bought sposies for the first time in 5 months for my upcoming trip and I tested them out the last few days and the weather was hot! I was so shocked to find that my ds's bum was not hot nor sweaty. The sposies I bought seem to have some air circulation going on the sides, and they hang down baggy around his privates (unlike my CDs) keeping him cooler. Truthfully, he felt cooler in these than my pockets and PFs! But they are still gross and I will only use when necessary. But I don't feel guilty for occasional use. Truthfully I was disappointed that I did not hate them more. But I do hate the fact that they are going to fill up the landfills... But at least my ds's family jewels are not cooking in there!

I've gotta say....I bought a package of sposies for travel and used them the other day when we had a long drive and they were awful convient. I am totally swaying a bit. I put her to bed with one on tonight because she has been soaking and leaking through her Night Lights every night. Ugh. I feel so guilty now!!!
I had some Huggies for a trip and they don't hold nearly as much as my FBs. DS woke all wet in the morning... only a rare occurance with my FBs.
I am going to bring FBs with my cottonbabies inserts on my trip for nighttime use. I have not been brave enough to use a sposie for that many hours... But during the day they work fine.

I don't think anyone on this board has to feel guilty about the use of spoises. How many sposies do we all keep out of the landfills, even if we only CD 50% of the time? It really adds up and everyone here should feel great about themselves. We support WAHMs and help the environment and our babies. Can't beat that!
Camryn is still partially in sposies because I've yet to recieve my full stash for her. But I have to say that the temperature argument seems a bit faulty to me. I've never once noticed that her little bum is any warmer or sweatier than the rest of her body. It's generally a pretty cool area.

That being said... I still don't like the idea of sposies simply because of the landfill issue and the comfort issue. I'd rather have cloth on me than paper and plastic any day.

But, I wouldn't worry too much about cooking your child if you must put them in a sposie or two.
Hello!

Great idea to take their temp
did you try just a fitted or just a PF with out a cover?? I bet their bums are real cool in that

very interesting on the temp thing. I am not surprised about the results, I think wool insulates very well and "breathability" isn't the only factor. I also found when I was doing my cd vs sposie research that a lot of the studies were done a long time ago, and these days, sposies are a very different product than they used to be - very trim and not plasticky at all.

DH put DS in a sposie (from our backup pampers cruisers) during our heat wave last week and his butt was not sweaty at all, whereas it was sweaty in a fitted and PUL cover, and in his fuzzibunz. Didn't even try a soaker, as mine are pretty thick wool.

FYI if you ever need to use a sposie for a trip or whatever, we had much better luck with the pampers cruiser (purple package) than with huggies - huggies always leaked.
What I hated about huggies when I've used them on trips is that they leave all kinds of clear gel beads stuck to my son's testicles and bum and I cannot get them off without actually washing him at least in a sink from the waist down with soap and water and wiping with a towel. Just sposie wipes would NOT get them off, and picking them off individually with my fingernails was just not thorough enough, so....the "convenience" of using sposies was kind of ruined with those dang Huggies which littered chemical beads all over my son's behind.
Yuck. Pampers are alright, but smell to high heaven (but not as bad as Luvs), and the finnish brand they sell here 'Libero' don't smell too strongly, don't leach gel, and work fine so I don't mind them for the airplane or whatever.... I agree there should be no guilt about using sposies when you feel they are really the best choice for a given situation, it's just a matter of being consciencious about your general waste habits and not using disposable anythings just because of a lazy habit (like people who eat on paper plates at home?
Or a million of other disposable products for the house that are kind of silly).
