I have decided to have an alter ego. A super hero no less.
I snapped the other morning while waiting in the OB department of the local hospital. The waiting room had hundreds of copies of American Baby, Baby Talk, Parents and Parenting's Pregnancy magazine. And it seemed that every third page was an ad for a breastmilk substitute with DHA and ARA. They showed a baby plugged up with a bottle and the copy said something to the effect how she's building up her IQ.
And it pushed me over the edge. At first I tore out a couple of ads and threw them away. And then I thought of something more subversive. I got my pen out of my purse and I started writing. I wrote on every advertisement for ABM that I came to. I wrote the truth about what it's made of and how it hurts baby.
And I didn't stop there.
I wrote comments in the margins of an article on "How to Wean from Breast to Bottle." I pointed out that the minimum recommended time to nurse is 12 months, so there's no need to use bottles at all.
And to cap off the morning, I expressed outrage at the advice to "take an overnight trip with your spouse before the baby is 5 months old because they will miss you less, and you deserve a break from the baby."

Wherever there is an ad for ABM, or an article advising detachment, my pen and I will be there.

Hey, you and Hathor (Hathor the cowgoddess ) should get together! I think you could rival the X men or the Super Seven (I think that was what they were called...).

Infact, you have inspired me. I am going to carry a pen with me from now on. I have something new to keep me busy in waiting rooms

i am so feeling the love here! i'm tempted to just start going around town and sitting in waiting rooms.

i'm also dreaming up a halloween costume as the Breast Avenger. i'll be the first superhero who needs an ensemble that camoflauges saddlebags and a pot belly. :

you know what else i did today? you all probably saw my other thread about the mom who won't nurse her second child past 6 months because it will be too hard to wean him after that, right? well, we popped into toys r us (i know, i know) for crayons and such, and the grandma who got the bad advice and new mom who wants to nurse longer with this baby were there too. so i went up to them and reintroduced myself and told her that i had been nursing for almost 2 years now and if she needed a sounding board or help of any kind, i was available. and she seemed pleased to hear that.

Instead of a cape, this superhero wears a sling.

Our old pediatrician had a book and magazine exchange program--take whatever you like home as long as you bring something in.

Well...

I took ALL the crappy American Baby, Parenting, etc. magazines--every fricking one--and left my old Mothering, Brain,Child Magazines, Sun Magazine, and Shambala Suns.

Of course, it doesn't make a HUGE difference, but every bit helps.

Elphaba, good for you! Maybe taking in some LLL pamphlets and your leader's card would help as well.

OMG gurumama! i love that! they had boxes of magazines out saying "free! take as many as you want!" i like the idea of replacing that crap with mothering, but i am not giving up my back issues! maybe i could sign the hospital up for some subscriptions....... but then they wouldn't pay and mothering would get screwed.

they did have a display of stuff called "Breastfeeding: The Gold Standard." and a few pro-breastfeeding posters, but those magazines are so subversive. people are captive in the waiting room for a good 30 minutes at each visit, and you go to the OBm what? 10-12 times? that's a lot of time to absorb pro-formula propaganda.

i'll have to get with the LLL people and see what we have to distribute. one of our leaders actually works with the OB residents, and they are supposed to send a resident every month to a meeting so they can learn about nursing from moms who actually do it. but she's got an uphill battle.

Ahhh, that is a fabulous idea! Except....maybe sticking little pieces of paper with "Ten Reasons to Breastfeed" or something like that would be better. I'm thinking someone's gonna point out these "helpful" hints to your doc's staff.....then they'll be watching for the "Breast Avenger" with her infamous pen. LOL MAYBE........instead of donating to Mothering or your (I'm talking to the collective "you" here) favorite charity.....you could gift a subscription to your local OB or ped's office??

I'm looking at a can of Enfamil Lacto-Free Lipil formula right now (at SIL's....who, despite a Herculean effort, wasn't able to establish a breastfeeding relationship with her baby)....and it says right on the front of the can "A blend of DHA & ARA - nutrients Found in Breastmilk" SHAME SHAME SHAME! IMO, the formula people shouldn't even be allowed to use the word "Breastmilk" in their advertising. Is Coke allowed to say "a blend of flavors found in Pepsi" ??? I guess the word "breastmilk" needs to be registered...then they couldn't use it.

Lisa (who's here at SILs right now...too lazy to log out

HA! what a wonderful superhero! Can I get an action figure??

I'm thinking you could print little labels on your computer or something, with reasons, helpful hints for BF and at the bottom, say for more helpful resources, visit......and put links for LLL or breastfeeding.com, something quasi mainstream.

It would look so professional, people would probably think it was the doctor's office staff's doing!!

Can you take your pen and cross out the word gold? It should be Breastfeeding: The Standard.
