I took my car in to a CPST check point to have my car seats checked out to make sure they're installed correctly, etc. I put in the seat for the new babe and moved ds' seat outboard, so I wanted to make sure all was well.

Anyway, they checked me all out and said things were good to go, then the head CPST buckled ds into his seat for me. I didn't even think to check to make sure she put him in right...she's the expert, right? Well, when I got home and went to take ds out, only the chest clip was clipped in! The crotch buckle was completely undone! I'm surprised ds didn't say anything, but even more surprised that this person could have been so careless.

I'm really questioning everything they told me now.

Sorry, just wanted to share that and rant a bit

As I was reading I was thinking maybe they didn't move the chest clip right or something....

but to only half buckle? That's not cool.

Totally. You don't know if some parent not educated in carseats will think that's okay...

i've been to two checks, one at the local community college and one at the volvo dealership. both times they told me a good tech never actually installs the seat or the child, bc of liability. they installed the seat once, to show me, then unhooked and made me do it over and over again until i got it right. and the same with ds...they had me put him in and asked me to tighten the straps until i got them right. so i'm suprised they would even put your lo in at all.

Yeah, it sounds like there was a lot wrong with that check. The parent should be the last one to touch the seat and to buckle in the child. And the CPST was wrong to tell you that you were "good to go" if you weren't, but the responsibility for making sure a child is buckled is always with the parent.

How scary! I would call and let them know what happened. That way they could make sure the tech is doing things correctly. Thank goodness you didn't have an accident on the way home. A dear friend of mine (childless) did this once with my DD, and I was so upset. But for a trained tech? Unforgivable!

I am glad you guys got home okay. That must have been very scary. She may have been distracted. I have put my dd in the car seat but forgotten to buckle her in a few times, luckily she was old enough to tell me before I backed the car out. I taught her from a young age why we buckle up so she was very good about making sure I was keeping her safe.
