Very quick overview: For several years I have had throat issues. Several boughts of strep, tonsilitis, and unkown b/c my Docs suck and won't check much (I keep switching, none better than other). I also have seasonal allergies which irritate my throat (usually when the infections attack too!) So 4 weeks ago DD and I get high fever, bad throat, assume it is viral. My worst Doc gives antibiotic automatic, I don't take due to probabaly viral. 2 weeks later DD gets very ill, high fever for a week, very infected throat, her Doc actually does a culture (mine REFUSED)-it is strep and the worst I have seen in a very long time. Needless to say, I feel it coming on Friday so I say screw my Doc and go to the ER for a strep culture, etc. It is confirmed I have it but I am allergic to anything ending in -cillen, get very ill from Erythromycin, other Doc gave Cipro but I don't wanna take cause I still nurse DS (age 2) fairly often. I have searched for non antibiotic treatments to no avail and have no cash to buy anything else (not even $5-my ins. covers mainstream stuff 100%). We are truly way below poverty at this point, so buying even vit. c is out of the question!

Anyway, I was given Zithromax-which I finished yesterday, and still have a soar-yet no longer pussy-extremely swollen (can't take most solid foods) throat. I call old Doc who'll see me but put me on mor meds or recommend surgey-which I can't do now of course). I am at my wits end. We are many, many, many months behind on all bills and I just got a new job I can't afford to miss anymore days! I am the only income and only worked 20 hours last week!

HELP, any ideas? Alternatives? PLEASE?!?!??!?!!??!?!??!?!

Bebesho, do you live in a high traffic (diesel especially) area? It could very well be the root cause of your problems. A relative of mine lived in a valley near a gravel pit, and trucks roared in and out all day, all diesel. She was advised to have surgery. She moved to a rural area and has not had tonsillitis since. I know that won't help you much, but do not dismiss the environmental. I think you'll need the vitamin C more than anything just to stay healthy if that is the case.

My throat is my achille's heel, so I know what you're feeling.
I have no advice about the antibiotics (I've always taken penicillin for strep), but if "C" will help, emergen "C" is a powdered form of mineral ascorbates (+ a bit of zinc, I think) and it is fairly cheap, .25 to .36 cents a packet here. One packet supplies 1000mg. Whole Food's sells the single packets and Trader Joes has a box for 8.99.
emergen "C"
Sodium Ascorbate is $7.99 a bottle and 1/2 teaspoon is 1390 mg of Vitamin C. It is the best form of C to take on a continual basis. Hilary talks more about the reasons over on the vaccine board. Sounds like stress might be a major factor here with you, so you really do need some good nutrition....Cayenne pepper, lemon juice, ginger root are some inexpensive healing foods. I don't deal with strep, but when I do get swollen glands, I grate some ginger, heat it to boiling and simmer, then remove from the heat and add lemon and cayenne. It does the trick every time.
Positive healing thoughts for you.

If you've got some Grapefruit Seed Extract, put 3-4 drops in a small glass of warm water & gargle (3 times?). I won't lie, it tastes like ear wax, but it really does relieve the pain & aids in healing.

Hugs and healings for you and your family.I like to gargle(then swallow) grapefruit seed extract in water.Tastes bad,but you get used to it.Soak toothbrushes in it(GSE).Also taking some sodium ascorbate powder(to bowel tolerance) helps.Maybe some goldenroot or golden seal tea too?
sara
ps. I get 3lbs of SA from vitaglo.com for around $30,and the GSE(source natural brand) I get from vitacost.com for I think $16.

Thanks for the ideas. I got biaxin. Realize I have no money, I now don't even have propane to work my oven/stove-so most cooking is off (we have a microwave and toaster oven). So whatever my nasty mainstream insurance is giving I have to try. SH and DS are home now too. DS is unhurt but DH is swollen and sore. They were hit by a tractor trailer and flipped over several times-landing upside down. DH was already unemployed but got a job offer he may have to wait or be unable to take now....

Anyway, send healthy vibes. I have some vitamins and will bum some food from my parents. They just don't eat all that healthy....

I'm so glad your dh and ds walked away form that accident (relatively) unhurt. I've been worried ever since you posted that they'd been in a bad accident.
s to you all. You'll get through this.
