We had our baby boy unassisted at home into water on August 2nd - and it was fantastic.
It was soo different from my first birth labour experience. With ds1 i had no warm up labour - he was born on his EDD and it only took 6/7 hours, which wasn't really painful until the end.
Ds2 took over 16 hours to make his arrival, he was 13 days late (according to 'them' not by my dates), and i'd had days of warm up labour - ohh and it really hurt - all my studying of pain free and orgasmic childbirth went out the window. I think ds2 started out ROA and turned the long way round to get to LOA - lots of back labour.
But it was amazing not to have a midwife there, no one was keeping me to any time limit, i got in and out the pool whenever i wanted, ate what i wanted when i wanted, got up and went to bed on several occasions. I was by myself for alot of labour - it started at 9pm at night and i got in the birthing pool at about 2am (thinking it might be quick like my first), i sent dh to bed so i could labour by myself - it was soo nice being in the pool just working through the contractions. I didn't really need dh until the last couple of hours when the pain became intense - this made dh really happy as he new it was nearly over (by this time it was 11:30am). With ds1 the midwife told me when to push - i hadn't really wanted to and it took a while for ds1 to come out and my stomach ached for days afterwards. With ds2 he just popped out within 3 or 4 pushes, which were beyond my control.
I found the best way to monitor if the baby was doing well was by feeling it move - no need for heart monitors!
People keep on asking if we feel proud of ourselves or that we are brave but to be honest it felt like the most natural thing in the world.
I'm glad my second birthing experience was so different from my first as it really taught me to trust in nature even when the unexpected was happening.
Anyway big thank you to everyone who contributes to this board as i found it a great support and an amazing source of information. Now i've officially had a UC i feel i can contribute more.
