So DH and I went for a walk with Riley on the beach. There was a young couple walking behind us in the midst of passing us and the girl was saying how she knew this woman who was about 40 *gasp* and still breastfeeding her 6 year old and how gross it was. Well I was getting a little irked just becuase I am a little more open minded plus I breastfeed.
Well then the young man...these guys were probably no older than 20....he says "I hear that there are a lot of benefits to breastfeeding." Perfect time for me to chime in of course. So I just turned around and said actually there are.
Well then she is like "But a 6 year old?" Then I went on to say that actually there are a lot of parts of the world where that isn't strange and that the US in general is very mainstream in thinking. And that yes babies who are breastfed longer reap the many benefits.
Then the boy says "I hear breastfed babies are smarter" Where he learned all of this I do not know. So I told them that I breastfeed and how I had heard that there are studies going on right now and that they are trying to say that breastfed babies will have less chance of having cancer later on in life. yadda yadda.
She then said that she had some friends who are breastfeeding babies a few months old and they already hate it
So I said yes it can be hard in the early months but it just gets so much easier and it is so healthy to do so.
She seemed totally happy and enthusiastically thanked me and DH who was backing up everything I said for educating her and she never knew any of that stuff.
Of course after we walked away I kicked myself in the butt for not telling her to tell her friends about LLL or Kellymom or something like that. Or that breastfed babies have a lower chance of being obese or the breastcancer thing.

Great that the boy already knew a lot about it!
Maybe his mom is a LLL Leader!
Hmmm maybe. Well the whole time I was saying stuff he was just smiling and nodding his head in agreement. And then he would look at my husband and smile. I should have asked where he heard all of his stuff.
