DS and I got home from running some errands this morning and I unbuckled his car seat and let him climb down by himself. He's done it before, but I've always been right there. For some reason I didn't think to stay there with him while he got down and went inside the put the mail on the counter. In the five seconds I was gone, he fell onto the garage floor and I heard his head hit the cement!!

I don't know if he fell from the height of being in his car seat (which is pretty high!) or from the height of the floor of the minivan. He cried, of course, but only for a few minutes, nursed and then fell asleep within about ten minutes. He responded by crying a little when I unlatched him from my boob and then I brought him upstairs.

How long should I let him sleep? Should I NOT let him sleep? There is no lump where he hit his head, but should I ice it anyway?

How can I tell if there is a problem? I feel awful!

Thanks for any advice!

It's hard to tell you what you should do, because I don't know how old he is. I would call your family doctor and ask his/her opinion. Talk to your son and ask him questions you know he can usually answer (again, depending on his age), make sure he's cognizant.... Try not to freak out, just be cautious. And don't beat yourself up over it! Good luck, I hope everything goes well.

Thanks! Yeah, he's 19mo. Sorry I forgot that info!

Just called my SIL who has three boys - they're teenagers now, and I know they've had their share of falls, and they've survived with everything intact! She basically said to keep an eye on his sleep (don't let him sleep longer than normal) and just keep an eye on his head where he hit the ground.

We have an appt with the chiropractor this afternoon, so I'll have him take a look!

Thanks again!

I would give him some homeopathic Arnica, because it helps with head injuries and prevents bleeding, if DD has a hard knock I always give her some just in case...anyhow your chiropractor might know more and maybe he can adjust him too. Hope he feels better. Its scary. My DD is always falling down - she is mildly insane and fearless - and it is upsetting I am sure he will be fine though.

My son fell on his head at the doctor's office once (on a hard, slick floor -- he was playing with that rolling backless chair doctors use). He hit hard, cried for a few minuted and then he was fine. The doctor came in, I told him what happened, and he just looked at him and said, "He looks fine to me!" Yeah. As long as he's acting OK, I wouldn't worry.

Thanks for checking in! He's completely fine. Kids are so resilient! He doesn't seem bothered (or affected) in the least. I will definitely be more careful about him playing in the car though!

Thanks to everyone who wrote in!
