First, lie down or semi-recline and press around on your belly to try and get an idea where and how the baby is lying.
For example, is it in the middle of your belly, or on the left or right side? Is it closer to your navel or to your pelvic bone?
Once you have that info, you can try to figure out how the baby is lying. it may be a little bit early to really feel the parts, but you should be able to get an idea where its back is. Then you can put the fetascope in that general area and start listening.
AS the baby gets bigger you will be able to make out back, butt, head, limbs etc, if it is head up or down, and which way it is facing (you can do this by palpating but also by noticing where you are feeling the most movement).
It isn't always easy to hear the heartbeat. You may have to search around a bit, and you will probably hear a lot of your bowel sounds, the pulse of the placenta and umbilical cord etc, as well as your hands moving on the fetoscope.

Hope this helps a bit. Have fun!

Find the baby's upper back and press in hard. Well I'm fluffy so I have to push in Make sure the ear pieces are pointed backward a bit. I got it loud and clear at 19w.

I'm fluffy too so I have to press in pretty hard. So hard in fact that I was getting a little ring indentation that lasted quite a while afterwards. Now, at 33 weeks it's not so bad.

Also, I could NOT tell what was what until about two weeks ago so I just always looked for the hardest part, which usually ended up being her back. It takes some practice.
Now, whenever I go poking around she moves so I haven't been able to hear it for some time now.

I hope your fetoscope doesn't hurt your ears the way mine does.

What kind of fetos do you fluffy moms like? I am also fluffy and planning to get a feto for this pregnancy. My mw said I probably won't be able to hear til around 25w, maybe later. I'm only 19w now so I haven't bought one yet.

How do you tell the difference between placental pulse and FHR, is it just the amount of BPM?

was the fetoscope expensive? where can you get one?

FHR is much faster - 120-160 BPM than your heartbeat/blood flow. The placental blood flow sounds swooshy while the FHR is like a steady little horse gallop. HTH!

The placental pulse, I believe, is the same as your heart rate.
