DS and I just finished a very bad week. Fever, chills, body aches, productive cough, sore throat, and sinus congestion accompanied by disgusting eye goop. One solid week of incredible yuckiness. I’m pretty sure it was the flu. The best part – I got the flu shot. I’m military, so I had to. DS, of course, didn’t, and neither did his dad. STBX was sick yesterday, but it wasn’t the same thing – 24-hour stomach bug. So he didn’t get the flu at all. I (vaxed for it) got it just as bad as DS (unvaxed). So what was the point of having poisons injected into my body???

It must not have been the flu. You weren't tested so we'll never know for sure. It must have just been a virus similar to the flu.

yeah that happened to us a few years back, we'll never do it again. We heard the "it's not really the flu" thing from the doc but he also never tested us so had no basis for his statment. Sorry you were so sick.

oh, yeah, it isn't a coincidence AT ALL that the years that i got the flu shot (back when i didn't know any better) were the years that i was flattened by a flu-like illness.

but you know, correlation doesn't equal causation, right?

:

hope you and your family are feeling better soon!

Flu vaccine hasn't been shown to reduce the number of febrile illnesses associated with lost work days (what lay peope tend to call 'the flu'). It has been shown in some studies to decrease the rate of proven influenza virus infection (influenza A or B) during a given season. However, it seems that people go on to get sick just as often and just as severely - only with other viruses not covered by the vaccine.

However, this year the vaccine seems to be a bad match and isn't covering the strains of influenza which are circulating. We're seeing a lot of confirmed influenza in vaccinated people.

I've yet to see a case in an unvaccinated person this year. Doesn't mean it isn't there, but - oddly enough - all the cases I'm seeing are in the vaccinated.
