Oh lady, we have to pay over 13k. And I have tried to think of EVERYTHING to write off. Our accountant is even trying to help us with "creative itemizing." Ah well, as long as some of it gets to our schools, I guess I'm happy.

BTW, meant to tell you how cute your last pregnancy picture was. I just had a photographer over here and showed him how cute that shot was. Of course, I didn't do anything like that b/c I became unbearably, painfully shy when I got in front of the camera...

That's awful that you both have to pay.

Our friend/CPA e-filed for us on 1/29 so we had our federal refund back in mid-Feb but have yet to see our state refund. It's almost $700 and I *need* it soon because without it I can't pay the midwife the whole birth fee in one lump sum like I'd planned. UGH.

I bet you all have to pay that money ASAP while the government will take it's sweet time giving us our money back.

We are very low income and usually get a hefty refund (EIC, Child Tax Credit, yay!)

This year, we bought a house, so we owe a total of almost 5K. Which somehow, we were totally unprepared for (gee, could it be that we haven't *paid* taxes in like 4 years?!?)

Luckily, we have enough left in our IRAs (which is how we were saving for a house, which is *why* we owe 5K - if you take it out to buy a house you don't pay the penalty, but it counts as income) to cover almost all of that amount.

So we are NOT going to have to set up a payment plan with the IRS or the state. Which makes me feel much better, actually.

But this is SO not fun. And it means that we now have essentially no savings to fall back upon in a future financial emergency. But it did seem silly to set up a payment plan now when we could avoid it, just to avoid having to use credit or set up a payment plan in the future for a hypothetical financial emergency.

But this is never a fun time of year, since DH earns 70% of his income from May - August. I'm trying to avoid taking our (meagre) savings account below the minimum balance to buy groceries/birth supplies this month, but I'm thinking I may have to, and if I have to to pay the mortgage anyway, which I will unless DH gets some unexpected $ in, I should just go ahead and do it.

I really ought to sign up for WIC, but I'm too busy.

Anyway. Big hugs to all of us struggling with finances at this vulnerable time. Do what you can do and let go of the rest.

MB- signing up for WIC here is soooo time consuming! I never weighed the right amount when pg/bf... always gaining too slow or not loosing fast enough so they made me come in at least once a month to pick up checks. My postpartum visit was 2 hours long and I almost passed out from hunger when I got home. We're not quite that desperate yet thankfully.

I hope things pick up for you soon... May is just around the corner!
