hi. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else before. I was supposed to start my period on Sunday and I have not yet. I am breastfeeding and my cycles have only been back for 4 months and one month I did not even have a period ( I had a 52 day cycle that month). Anyway my dh and I have been really lax with using any bc lately. We had unprotected sex on day 16 of my cycle and my last cycle was 30 days. ANyway I did not start so on MOnday I took a FactPLus select test. You are supposed to read after 3 minutes but not more than 20 minutes. I dipped the stick in the pee - watched the pee move across the reult window and decided it looked like it was going to be negative. I sat it on the counter walked to the kitchen for a drink and walked back in a lo and behold there was a very faint pink line - so I am thinking well there is a line. I take the other test in the box and the line occurs on this in less than 2 minutes. I decide to get a blood test and it is negative - the nurse even called them to rerun in which confirmed it was negative. I had taken a test in the box on Thursday before the sunday I was supposed to start and there was no line in the result window at all. Later I show my mom the tests and she is a nurse and she goes "oh yes those are definitely positive". Well I know that the HCG gets in your blood before your urine first. What the heck is going on? Was it just faulty tests?

Gosh, sounds so hard and confusing!! It could be that they were faulty tests, in which case you may want to go get a seperate test. It also could be that the lab somehow goofed up your blood sample, so re-running the tests on the same blood would not have helped. Did they do another draw? Hard to imagine that they could have goofed up at the lab, but you never really know!!

Hope you find some answers soon!!

Have you ever gotten a *neg.* pregnancy test? I recall reading in a medical article that people with a certain antigen that reacts with the urine bHCG test will always test positive on a urine test (but not blood). I can give you more info if you need it.

Just FWIW - your mom shouldn't be able to tell anything after the test has sat around for 10 minutes or so (I'm surprised this brand says 20, but whatever). They often get a "faint false pos." after sitting around for a while and that info is usually buried somewhere in the literature that comes with them.

With ds I tested posative w/ hpt 2X and tested negative w/ test at doctors office. This was very early in my pregnancy. So I waited and within a couple weeks I started having morning sickness and fatigue. Went back to the doc's office and had a posative test.

I still have not started my period but I feel like maybe I will - of course I felt that way when I was preg with dd and never did start. I thought I was having cramps even and thought I wasn't pregnant. With her I had NEGative HPTs at home but my blood test was positive.

If I have not started by next Monday I will try to test again at home with a different brand. I just don't know what is going on. I mean they say if you get a positive HPT you are definitely pregnant, but if it is negative you still might be pregnant. When I showed my MOm the test it has not changed in appearance since I looked at it when I first took it.

I just called the lab and they said their test can detect it at 6 days past conception. Hmm. I could have ovulated later in the month ( my cycle is still wacky with bfing). Maybe I am just pulling at threads here. I just really thought with 2 positive tests I must be pregnant.

OK, some extreme situaitons: the author of the What to Expect books was pregnant although 2 blood tests and a gyn exam said she wasn't, and in Open Season there is a story of a healthy, normal-sized 13-week-old fetus that was not detected by ultrasound. It was detected when the doctor resorted to a D&C, but by then it was too late.

When I took the test I mentioned above my ob/np told me maybe I was ovulating that day and that's why my tests were + and hers was not(the next day). She said "if you don't get it in 2 weeks call me back. Well I called her back, told her I was still getting a +hpt and she did another blood test which came back with very high hcg levels(naturally since I am pg). They had themselves convinced still that their first test was right and did an ultrasound to confirm how many weeks I was. I was right on about the weeks ofcoarse. I never did get a straight answer from them as to why my test came back negative.
So you never know, you could be pg.

Did the lab do a qualitative pg test or a quantitative test?

A qual. one will tell you if you are pg or not by a pos or neg result. Your hcg has to be a certain level for that test to be pos.

A quant. test will give you the exact number and anything over 9 (at my lab) indicates pg.

If the lines on you hpt were very faint, chances are you aren't very many days post ovulation. Much less than 14dpo and a qual. test will be neg even though you may indeed be pg.

I'd find out what kind of test you had and go from there.

Good luck!

I wanted a quantitative but they don't do them unless you already KNOW you are pregnant via bloodtest. I called the lab and they suggested I call my OB for a quantitative test. I am giving it until next week and if I don't start I think I will take a different brand HPT and see if it is positive. I still feel like I could start. This is just so weird...

No.

U/s are accurate plus or minus one week, especially early ones. There is almost no chance they could have been off by their measurements by 6 weeks. Nah, no way.

Phew! I didn't think so but it always feels better hearing it from someone else! I was charting so I'm pretty sure of my O date. When I first went in they thought (by feeling( that I was about 14 weeks not 8. Which is why I had the early u/s... not that I would mind being 6 weeks farther along but that gives me a whole lot less time to "get ready"! kwim?

babydoll--have you thought about testing at home again this weekend...or was it monday???

I really feel like since I had the negative blood test I am not pregnant. I think I am going to give myself until next week (Monday or Sunday) and retest. I feel like it would be a waste of $ to test again this soon since the blood test was negative.
