I have a toad!!

Now how do I make him want to stay?

I just noticed him today. I saw a "burrowing" movement where I've had a problem with roaches in my flowerbed, brushed some dirt aside because it just didn't seem like normal roach movement and found an EYE staring at me! I appologized and asked him to stay and he hunkered in a little and I took that as a "Ok, I'll stay"

Anyhow, I'd foolishly planted daliah bulbs in my west facing beds and now that it's getting to 110 and up half of them have died... just on the north side where the toad is. I've been trying to irrigate/flood those plants, but I don't think the toad would be much into being flooded.

In Oregon, my mom attracted toads to our garden by making a "toad abode" out of an overtrned pot in a shady corner. I'm afraid anything like that would just turn into a kiln!

There are plenty of insects around, but I want him to stay at MY house and eat the roaches here (I already saw him hunt one down from the window, I love him) What else should I do? Do I hold off on flooding? The plants on that side are going to die anyhow, so it wouldn't be a problem.

If you do the toad home you could make one that has a tunnel going into a hole in the ground, and that would be covered by the pot.I saw it in the 1001 easy garden projects I think. To some degree the toad might like the flooding.I have 2 toads and 2 frogs(in house) waiting for a pond to be built, and I put them in water each day for a good soaking. You could put out a shallow dish near the toad home, and change the water every other day.The toad home is not really needed as long as it has somewhere to hide.
have you tried kissing him to see if he turns into a prince?

Well, I would, but I'm pregnant and I think the halucinagenic properties of this particular toad may be... um, restricted for pregnant mothers

I think he likes the super moist soil

We have a toad living under a big bucket that sits on some rocks. We keep the bucket filled with water for the animals. We fill the bucket twice a day and I normally flood it as I forget to turn off the water.

Oooo i just made toad homes... i had 2 toads living under my seed starter in my garden for a few weeks and when i moved the thing so i could plant where it had been sitting i realized i was going to have to make them new homes so what i did was where my garden meets the grass i dug out narrow little tunnels and cubbies for them under the sod then i put a flat rock in the front to make it more 'privet'
so the little toad didn't care for his new home and now chooses to live under my broccoli leaves but the big toad seems pleased and returns to his little cubby every day. i love the toads in my garden! i've been meaning to take a walk down by the marsh around dusk and find more for my garden i figures its a win win, tons of bugs to eat and their eating ton of terriable veggie destroying bugs

yeah for toads.... i wish all of you garden toads!!

I want a toad.
I have a big fat toad living under my trumpet vine, it's in a pot, and he snuggles in right under the pot. He doesn't mind being flooded when I water the plant either. I leave a small bowl of water under the steps (nearby) for him too.
Well, my toad (of course he's his own toad, I am just happy to be associated with him) decided to not spend his days sleeping at my house anymore. Maybe because I "checked" on him while he slept too much. Anyhow, he returns at night to eat bugs so I guess we're still on good terms.

Last night he about scared the pie out of me. I hadn't seen him all day so flooded the side he usually burrows in, went out to change the side the hose was on and there he was! Odd to suddenly realize you're being stared at. I warned him that I was about to flood but he didn't care, he was up to his eyeballs when I turned the water off and just stayed right there until the water soaked in.

Ask and you shall receive!
I just brought a bunch of scraps to the composte pile and discovered a toad living under the cardboard I use to keep the crows out of it.

I hope it stays. There's plenty of bugs for it to eat!
