Now how did THAT happen? We have had bunny ears ever since we moved in nearly two years ago, but tonight, I suddenly have freakin' Discovery, Nickelodeon, A&E, ESPN and a bunch of other stuff.

The cable company hasn't been out here or anything.

So, how the heck? Do you think it'll last? Is it a ploy on their part to get my husband re-hooked on cable TV?

And are y'all going to turn me in to the Cable Cops?

Sounds like someone in your building (do you live in an apartment?) decided to get generous when hooking up his own illegal cable.

Of course, this still leaves unanswered the question of why you apparently have a cable input hooked up to your TV when you don't have cable service.

No, it's not an apartment... it's kind of a semi-rural neighborhood where all the houses are on acreage. DH did just move our computer into the room our TV is in... and I think the TV has had cable service at some point in its life, back before DH and I got married. Would that explain it? I really don't know anything, since I've never had cable myself.

It's so weird! :

I doubt it applies here, with your rural setup, but I had friends in college who lived in one of those old houses that had been converted into multiple apartments. The cable was set up in such a way that if one person got cable, the whole building got cable.

Huh! I really don't think this place has even been a multiple-unit sort of place, though.

Right now, the Sopranos are on. First time I've ever seen it. And wow, it IS kind of violent, eh?

When my dad moved into his new house that had been vacant for over 2 years he had free cable for awhile. We think they forgot to shut it off before the previous owners left, but then he got digital and had to pay..

I have had free cable for nearly three years. I have reported it twice. We pay for the most basic cable possible just to get a few channels, but we were getting thirty channels and only paying for 13-17? so I called to let them know. Well they "fixed" it by giving us 67 channels. I called again and we ended up with HBO too. My conscience is clear. I tried twice!

I'd keep reporting it. Maybe they'll start paying your phone bill and providing you with free heat and electric.

I had a similar thing happen when we first moved into our current house. I noticed the we had CSPAN of all things and I thought that that had to be cable. I reformated the TV for cable and we had extended basic. I'm nearly positive that they just didn't shut it off when the previous owner left. Then several months later it just disappeared.

Do you have cable internet? I guess I had cable for a year and didn't even know because you have to have basic cable to get the internet.

I AM the cable cops. I work at The EVIL Empire of cable and even used to work in the abuse department. Thankfully I loathe my job, so you are all off the hook. :

Free cable will often happen if you got turned on by mistake. Some hook-ups can happen right from the pole and if they activate the wrong one you get free cable. Depending on how diligent they are you may get shut off tomorrow or you may have free service for life. (around here they have special trucks that actually go around looking for "illegal" hook ups. )

You are not actually doing anything illegal btw. Even if they catch the mistake you have done nothing wrong. They will try to talk you into keeping it and paying for it though. Its only illegal if you actually were stealing it from a neighbor or something.

Oh, and having a tv hooked into a cable line even if you don't have cable is pretty common. Even when not activated it acts like an antenna and you can get your off air channels in more clearly. Some people even hook it to their stereo for better reception.

Of course, this still leaves unanswered the question of why you apparently have a cable input hooked up to your TV when you don't have cable service.

A friend of mine discovered that when he got cable internet, they accidentally turned on a full cable TV package, as well. He didn't discover it until 6 months or so after he moved in, and he decided to hook up his cable because he was planning on subscribing. Low and behold, he already had it. Score!

My mom finally got cable and was paying for it. She stopped paying her bill and they stopped sending them to her, but never turned the cable off.

I've used the cable jack to get better local channels many times and I always loved when I found that they did not turn it off from the previous person.
