A bit of background. My son was adopted and brought home at 4 months. He is likely drug exposed. He also was born testing + to Hep C. He does not have Hep C, it was strictly antibodies. He has always been on target in all areas, but there has always been something. He is currently 5 yrs old.
When he was 3 he was hyper. We began researching and reading books and finally tried different elimination diets. He is allergic to ALL artifical colors and flavors (including colors in soaps and lotions that are absorbed through his skin). He becomes very hyper and has problems with impulse control. If we keep him on a good diet (and we all know there are occassional slips) he is a much more calm child that is in control and makes good decisions.... but...
He CHEWS ON EVERYTHING!
He chews his shirts, until there is a hole. He will chew on pillows, shopping carts, he will pick up nasty left over drinks from who knows where and put it directly into his mouth. He even chewed on the foot of my bed (wood) one morning while I was showering.
His chewing is not intentional defiance. He doesn't even notice he is chewing. When we ask him to remove something from his mouth he does, but within a few minutes its back in his mouth or he has found something else.
I am not sure where to begin looking for information. I can't give him suckers or gum as its colors and flavors that in turn make him hyper. Where do we begin? Could it be another food allergy we haven't found? Are there diets you could suggest we start with? Our naturopath isn't overly concerned. He suggested we look back into elimination diets and see if we can't find possibly another allergy.
We need ideas aside from dog bicsuits!!! Help!
