It took my dh close to a year and a half. (Admittedly, he doesn't have a great skill set but he is a nice guy who makes a good impression and can have an intelligent conversation about anything.)

Try to get all the paperwork for things like unemployment pay, medi-cal, etc filled out now--just in case. The last thing you want to do is wait until the last minute for these things, since the bureaucracy can make these things take forever.

I am sorry. My DH was laid off this afternoon as well. This is getting scary. We are okay for now but I am starting to hear about a lot of people losing their jobs.

You might want to wait until July to file for Unemployment, depending how it works in your state. We found out today that if we wait a couple weeks until the start of the new quarter he will get a higher amount. but it all depends on how much you made...it could be lowered if you wait until the start of a new quarter.

Network like crazy. I don't know your field, but contact everyone you ever worked with or for and let them know they you are looking for a new opportunity to do xyz. Neighbors, friends, family, friends of family and family of friends can help.

I can only imagine that you might feel embarrassed or ashamed -- even though you have no reason to. Please don't let that get in the way of you telling everyone you meet that you are looking for work.

I'm trying to remember from your other thread- were you planning to go back to school? If so, this would be the ideal time.

Agree with a previous poster about networking - maybe join LinkedIn?. I see a lot of job opportunities pass through there.

And if you are not in an urgent situation - which it sounds like you are not - try to enjoy the time a bit. It's so rare that we get to slow down.

I just got notice that I am losing my job in October. I am thankful for the notice but I feel like I will now have several months of stress and worry! I am trying to be positive and think that maybe this is an opportunity for something better but with economy it's hard to think that way. I wish this could mean that I can now stay home with my dd but in reality I know that I MUST bring in money every month. I can't get my mind focused on one path to pursue. Take some classes to freshen up skills? Try to do something at home like a home daycare? Take whatever job comes along? Relocate? It's almost too much to process. I am stressing out!

I was contemplating graduate school, but it's too late to get into anything now. If I was applying (and I may), the earliest I would be admitted for most schools would be September 2009.

So many people are getting laid off today! There must be something in the water.

I must say I was taken by suprise to be laid off on a Wednesday. I was always told that companies liked to lay off on Fridays.

Try anyway, you have nothing to lose! Check with UI to see if what you'd like to go to school for would be covered by worker retraining funds. They may be able to cover your tuition and books until your FAFSA money kicks in. Good luck!
