And it made me want a homebirth/waterbirth even more! We had a local couple do a presentation on Hypnobirthing. During part of it, they showed us their personal birth. The husband was in the tub with mama catching the baby....just the 3 of them in the tub and nobody else "helping" (they had a midwive but she was on the sidelines).

I haven't seen a lot of births like that....just the ones I watched before ds was born on "A Birth Story".

Wow....was that inspiring, and would I love to be able to get dh to the point where he would want that same type of birth as much as I want it!

Mmmm, that is so yummy!

I'm expecting my 4th and my DH has gotten a little more adventuresome each time. With the 1st, he semi-caught as the MW applied compresses & caught with him. With the 2nd he did most of the catching although the MW was right there on the bed with him. With the 3rd, he did all the catching by himself.

My son was just asking us if a "doctor" was going to catch our baby and my DH said, "No, that's just on TV. In our home, Daddy catches the babies." Although, personally, I think I'd like to catch this time if I'm in a position to do so.

Cool!

Although DH is totally on board with our homebirth/waterbirth, he wants no part of baby catching. I'm hoping to catch myself this time as well! Or who knows, maybe DH will change his mind in the heat of the moment, or maybe the birth will happen so fast that he will have no choice.

I told dh about the video last night (after I posted). He is slowly warming (or should I say giving in because he realizes I'm not backing down on this one) to the idea of homebirth. I told him that is what I want for our birth to be like, that I think him being that active a part of the birth would bring us so much closer together. His response (God love him) was "I don't know about that....I think delivering a baby is much better left up to professionals".

I asked "what if the midwife is standing 3 feet away from you and watching the entire thing?". His response "oh, man....I just don't know". I could see a slight panic in his body language. So I dropped it....I'll let him stew over that a little before I try to bring up homebirth again.

Have you two seen the Business of Being Born? That might be a good way to get him aclamated to birth and the idea of homebirths . After seeing the BOBB, DH was all for a home waterbirth, wants to be in the tub with us and catch the baby. I was VERY shocked.

There are lots of great home waterbirths on youtube. Some are more graphic than others. This one is one of my favs. because it is short and I could show it to ALL of my family members without worrying about them being squeamish:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0fN8V_J28A

:

My DH was the same. He did not want to be anywhere near catching the baby through the whole pregnancy. Then at the last prenatal, he told the midwife he wanted to catch the baby. But during labor, I really needed him by my head. He popped down there every few minutes to watch DS crowning but he didn’t catch him.

I agree…BOBB is excellent.

Have you heard of Birth As We Know It? I've only watched the trailers on the website, but it's so beautiful! Lots of waterbirths... in fact, I think all of them might be. Moms catching, Dads catching. Really awesome. There's one scene in a trailer where mom, dad and young child are all in the water (it's a clear-walled tub), and the child is reaching down and touching the top of the baby's head as she's crowning. Amazing.

http://www.birthasweknowit.com/

When I was first pregnant I mentioned the idea of home birth to my hub and he wasn't particularly for it... but after researching it on his own, he has become a strong advocate! He's at the point where he's trying to convince every woman he cares about of child bearing age that its the best way to go.
After the research we've both done, we're at the point where we can't imagine a sane person planning anything else... Hospitals are very important for emergencies and "high risk" deliveries, but with all signs pointing to a healthy mom and baby, it seems like the last place you'd want to start out.
Its all about a shift in perspective.
Good luck with a wonderful birth - no matter where or how

It's going to be quite a while before dh is ready to watch a birthing movie with me. Today, at the park, we met up with my best friend who had a birth center birth. I had told dh last night about her baby having distocia, and how the Gaskin method was utilized to deliver (dh was cracking up because our BIL's last name is Gaskin). Anyhoo...dh was amazed when my friend told him about the delivery and how the ped at the first checkup was floored that the baby had no broken shoulder or clavical.

I think it's more stories of that, and him having more of a realization that non hospital births are totally "normal" that will help him feel better about my decision.

I'm sorry, but this link was along the side as I was watching and my curiosity got the better of me. What a contrast eh? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJauA...eature=related

My dh was the same way. He didn't even want to cut the cord (he refused to cut it with ds as well). The ONLY reason he was a little worried about homebirth was fear that the mw wouldn't make it in time and he would have to catch the baby. Well low and behold the mw didn't make it in time and he had to catch the baby. haha. Afterwards he was really happy he did it although he still refused to cut the cord. Although when I mention him catching future babies he gets all weird about it again lol.

I had my first baby at home and caught her myself. Well, the mw didn't make it in time and dh went to call her and missed the birth. So there was nobody else to catch her but me.
However, the initial plan was for either dh or me catching the baby anyway. Most of my mw's clients have waterbirths and she just sits by the tub and watches. She doesn't do perineal support in the tub, because water itself provides it. So most often the dad or mom catch their own baby regardless.
When we have the next one there is only one thing I'd change - for dh not to miss the birth (it's ok if the mw misses it again *lol*). So dh or I will be catching our next baby as well.

There are different midwives out there. Some want to deliver the head and then they "let" the mom or the dad catch. But the mw I had was comfortable taking a secondary role and letting the parents receive the baby. That's how I like it.
