for DD2. she is 18 months old, and a right cannon ball, the kid never stops and has no fear. she wriggled out of daddys arms while daddy was sitting in the computer chair, she fell, landed on her front, i thought she hurt her face, nope. her hand, we thought it was just a sprain, waited till morning to see how she was decided to have her checked out

DH took her hospital this morning as a precaution, turns out it was a good idea

she has broken her wrist. is in an above elbow cast.

my poor baby!

poor DH feels bad too as he tried to catch her and missed

Oh poor kiddo! (and poor mama and dada!)

I hope she recovers quickly and with a minimum of fuss... how does she feel about the arm cast? Can they move her to a soft/inflatable cast soon?

Big hugs to all of you... it's amazing how quickly they can get themselves bumped and bruised and squished. They bounce back from things that would drop an adult in their steps, and then a tiny tumble throws everything out of whack.

shes ben home 5 mins and already will NOT allow anyone to help her do anything, if she falls over, she wants to do it herself, she went nuts when i tried to hold her water up for her to drink. she doesnt seem fazed at all.

it's probably worse for you watching it than for her....these little ones are so tough, it's not even funny....

dd broke her clavicle at 5 mths, but never cried about it. she healed in 2 weeks and she only wore her sling for 10 days or so. sorry for you guys though. i know personally that parental guilt takes a lot longer to heal!

Oh man! Bummer! I saw this in new post and didn't want to read but not comment.

Was she not using that hand at all before you took her in? How did you decide she needed to be seen? I have three little crazy boys who are constantly taking spills. I wonder sometimes what the 'line' is, when they need to get checked out further, and when they don't.

i dont really know what made me what her seen, just the way she would use her hand, but not properly, she would avoid using it, she could pick up somehting but gingerly, didnt seem able to rotate her hand, got very very upset when she couldnt hold her toast to eat in the morning after she did it, and just the way she cried seemed different.

Both me DH and the admiting Dr thought soft tissue damage. the Dr was almost certain it was a sprain but did a xray "just to be sure".

she has her hard cast on now.

when we got there i saw her xray the break looks like some one took a white pencil and drew a wonky line on her xray. the Dr said she will be in a cast for 2 weeks, then sent us to get her proper cast done. the tech took one look at her temp cast and exclaimed "Oh, she kept it on!" me and dh looked at each other, she ahd warned him the day before "she make take it off" we both thought she ment the sling, not the cast, she hardly touched her cast, other than to pull fluff out of it. She asked us and the Dr if it would be OK to "complete" the cast instead of doing a new one as the temp one was in a perfect position, Dr agreed, we thought yeah, less trauma for DD, quicker and cheaper for the NHS. we went in, DH sat with her and immediatly she started fighting him, i tried, sat down, offered her the breast she nursed, the tech checked her cast, added some padding, DD started crying then spent the entire 10 mins alternating between crying and nursing while i rocked her and the tech quickly got the hard layer applied. when she finished DD nurse a few more moments, decided she wanted the other side then looked bewilderd when we said it was done.

she is fine. about 10 mins after we got home she noticed she could made funny sounds by rubbing it against stuff.

the Dr seemed a bit surprised that she had no further painkiller from 1pm yesterday afternoon, she has not seememd to need any so we havent given any. and that she slept all night (all night for DD2 is from when i put her in her cot which was around 10pm till 5.30 then she came in with me till 6.30)

Kiz

i made her a crochet "glove" to go over it for when she ate as i dint want it getting wet, and while she slept as the cast was rough.

Hi Mama,
Poor baby!
I feel your pain- my DD broke her leg right around 18 months when she jumped off of her highchair. If it makes you feel any better, once DD was in a cast (maybe after the first 48 hours) she was acting fine- running and climbing in the cast. They heal pretty quickly, and adjust to the cast very quickly, too.
FYI- if the fiberglass cast is scratchy to you or to DD, put a Babylegs over it (cut a thumb hole in it). We did that over DD's leg casts and it helped keep them clean, and kept us from getting completely scratched up.
pm me if you have any questions!

maddymama thats a lovley idea but i actually made a crochet cover for her last night, took me and hour and its fab. im busy making her a "sock" for it too. i dont have any babylegs nor can i get any, but yarn and needles i have, in spades.

its nice to know how resiliant little ones actually are. i will never again feel silly for seeking medical attention for something that seems like it may be something small. (we thought it was a simple sprain, nope its a buckle fracture)

Now... see... if I could crochet or knit I would have made DD a cover. I think it's fabulous you've made a cover for the cast. And in a hour, too.... that's great. Tell your DH I understand about the "not catching thing" I was right next to DD when she broke her leg, I just missed grabbing her arm by an inch. GUILT!!! Our doc thought it was a simple sprain, too, based on DD's actions. He was surprised as well when the Xray showed a buckle fracture, too.
They heal pretty quick. I hope your little one is doing well!
