Hi. I'm in the process of looking at the book lists floating around this forum. My DD is only 9 months old, but I'm hoping to read at least a few GD books this summer because its the only time I'll probably have to really read for 'pleasure' until next year.

Can you point me towards some GD books that I would be able to begin applying right away? Ones that are directed more towards (or have great sections on) the 1-3 age group?

Thanks ladies.

If you're looking for a book that talks about toddler stages and how they relate to discipline, I VERY HIGHLY recommend Becoming the Parent You Want to Be. (Actually, the book has sections on many different toddler/preschool subjects. Imo, the discipline section is the reason to get the book).

It was a huge benefit to me when ds was younger- some of the ideas and advice truly made my life easier! IIrc, it was the only book that I read (and I read a LOT!) that specifically talked about kids under the age of 5, and had specific strategies for toddlers. I think they do a fabulous job of explaining "why" toddlers do what they do, and how they think, etc.

I would just like to echo DevaMagick. That would be my #1 choice for the toddler years. #2 would be Playful Parenting, by Lawrence Cohen, and #3 would be Connection Parenting, by Pam Leo. If you find yourself drawn toward rewards/bribes/overpraising and/or timeouts, I highly recommend Unconditional Parenting, by Alfie Kohn. Having said that, I think it is difficult to apply this stuff to a kid who can't talk back. Oh, and I highly recommend one and only one chapter of Parenting Your Toddler -- the one on socialization.

I'll also put a plug for the Louise Bates Ames books. I've only read the understanding your 2 yr old, but found it so insightful. Plus its a quick read and had some excellent list that i was able to copy for DH.
