I need help

I'm due with baby#2 in 2 weeks and haven't made a diapering decision yet. With my first I didn't use cloth until he was 15 mo. so I have no experience CDing a newborn. Cost is a factor so am I correct in thinking that my cheapest option is going with prefolds and covers? (I can't sew so making my own isn't an option). Do prefolds come in different sizes? Do I have to pin prefolds or can they be held on well with the cover? (I don't really want to have to deal with pins). Baby will be breastfed, so can I really just throw the whole poopy diaper in my washer??? Any advice on CDing neborns would be much appreciated. I'm so confused as to what to do.

You can get prefold in the newborn size at www.greenmountaindiapers.com for $21 per dozen. I had a little girl and she can still fit them at 10 weeks although the yellow edge infant size do fit better now. It's an economical way to go. You don't have to pin either. Get a pack of snappis and you are good to go. The thirsties xs fit longer then the bummis newborn by the way. I'm sure every baby is different but the smalls would have been way to big on my lo in the beginning.

Washing: No need to rinse if your baby is ebf. Just toss in your diaper pail. We do a cold water prewash followed by a hot wash with a second rinse and haven't had any problems. I'm ok with some staining since she is just going to poop in them again.

Hope that helps!

Yes, this is the cheapest option. Rule of thumb is 12 for each day you'll go between washing. Even 3 dozen prefolds are fairly inexpensive. For covers, you'll want to go with at least 4-6, we had 8.
Do prefolds come in different sizes? Yes! The most common sizes are infant, premium, and toddler. GMD has other sizes as well. Many people like the GMD orange edge, but others use the regular infant size right from the beginning. I had both-the oranges didn't fit too long for us, but they were great as pocket inserts.
Do I have to pin prefolds or can they be held on well with the cover? (I don't really want to have to deal with pins). You can trifold in a cover, but may get more poo leaks. A Snappi is really easy to get the hang of and will help hold in messes.
Baby will be breastfed, so can I really just throw the whole poopy diaper in my washer??? Yes! This is the best part of diapering a nb, IMO. We throw them in the wash as is and they come out clean every time. Enjoy it while it lasts.
